But it’s worth knowing the basics about repairing your toilet in case something does happen.

The chances are you have a few toilets scattered around your home, in various bathrooms and ensuites, so it pays to be in the know.

Let’s take a look at three of the most common faults you can expect with your toilet, and tips on how to fix these.

How to replace the float

Inside the cistern of your toilet, you’ll find a float. If water somehow gets itself inside this then it’ll need replacing, otherwise the toilet won’t function correctly. It’s pretty easy to replace this float though and first you’ll simply need to unscrew it from the arm. The replacement can then be screwed into its place. For your own information, it’s worth knowing that the water level shouldn’t be more than 12mm below the overflow pipe.

[caption id="attachment_336" align="alignright" width="300"] Image via Pinterest[/caption]

How to fix a non-flushing toilet

If your toilet bowl isn’t emptying properly then one of the common issues is a blockage. However, this isn’t always the reason so it’s worth knowing other ways you can fix it.

Ensure the main water supply is switched on and has the correct volume and water pressure. You may find a tap or knob located near the toilet which allows more or less water to flow through the pipes.

Also bear in mind that not all toilets are designed to completely empty the pan. If some water stays behind it might not necessarily be a problem, and it could simply be for economical purposes.

How to clear a blockage

As we have already mentioned, one of the reasons for a toilet fault could be from a blockage somewhere in the pipe network. Often an obstruction is found in the S bend where the base of the toilet connects to the stench or waste pipe. Using a plunger is one way to clear the blockage, but is only really successful with small obstructions.

If you suspect a larger blockage, then a high-pressure burst of air could be the solution. There are specialist tools that can do this, and you can also call out a plumber to help remove the blockage too.

How much will a plumber charge?

It depends on the problem with your toilet, but expect around £60-£100 to fix most problems with your loo.

Need a plumber now? You know that you're going to have to deal with it, but it feels better to put it off.

But you are going to have to tackle it eventually. You might opt for a drain unblocking gel, but the reality is that this will only work in the very short term.

If you leave your blocked sink or bath too long, it's only going to get worse. But luckily, it doesn't usually take a plumber to sort this problem out.

Follow our tips on how to unblock a sink and you will have yours running back to normal in no time.

1. Use the right equipment

Sink unblocking chemicals won't get rid of the entire blockage, no matter how many times you run different products down your drain. You need to go old school.

You're going to need a plunger. They're simple to use as long as you know how.

2. Make sure your plunger is big enough

Now is not the time to scrimp on quality. Make sure your plunger is big enough and flexible enough to withstand the exertion. You'll find a good quality plunger in any DIY store.

3. Run some water

If you're going to unblock a sink, you'll need to run some water into the sink to let it block. Then put the plunger over the plughole, making sure that there's some water still left in the sink.

4. Cover the overflow

Don't forget this step. Block the overflow with a damp cloth to trap air. This will make the plunging action work.

5. Plunge

Now plunge for a few minutes until the water drains away like normal. Eventually you should release the blockage and your drain will run like it should.

What happens if plunging doesn't work?

All is not lost yet. If plunging doesn't unblock your sink, there is something else you can try.

Unscrew the trap

This might get a bit grim, but it could work. Put a bowl or bucket under the trap of the sink, which is bowed part, and unscrew the pipe.

As the trap is bowed, you can end up with all sorts of things blocked in there. Think hair, bits of food and built up soap scum. It's probably going to be a bit yucky, but you'll probably just have to pull out a lump of all these things stuck together.

Once you've removed the blockage, simply screw the pipe back together and you should be good to go.

What happens if these don't work?

If these methods don't help you unblock a sink, it might be time to call in the professionals.

A plumber will be able to locate a blockage if it's further down your pipework. It's an easy job for them but it might take a little while longer to fix than a standard blockage.

Expect to pay between £35 and £65 for a plumber to unblock your sink.

Ready to give these tips a go with your sink or bath? These are in place to prevent waste and make sure that your plumbing is safe.

Keep reading to learn all you need to know about plumbing regulations.

Building regulations

Building regulations exist to ensure structures are safe and accessible. The government writes them and local authorities enforce them. They cover plumbing work, so it’s important to be aware of them if you want to do any pipe work.

You’ll need to make sure you adhere to building regulations if you’re altering existing or installing new plumbing. This could be in a bathroom, kitchen or as part of a new or altered heating system. Building regulations relate to a range of things, including:

pipe size

the positioning of waste pipes

pipe ventilation

The easiest way to ensure your plumbing follows building regulations is to hire a plumber registered with a competent person scheme (CPS). They’ll self-certify their work and contact your local authority if necessary. They’ll also give you a compliance certificate to prove the completed work meets building regulations.

Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999

The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 is a set of rules relating to plumbing systems, water fittings and water-using appliances connected to a mains water supply. They cover their design, installation and maintenance. These plumbing regulations are in place to prevent water waste and contamination.

To make sure that your plumbing follows these regulations, you can hire a plumber registered with an approved competence scheme. There are several schemes a plumber can register with, most of which are run by water suppliers. You can check whether your plumber is registered with the competence scheme they say they are by contacting them.

Water suppliers are responsible for making sure that your plumbing follows water supply regulations. If they inspect it and find that it doesn’t, you will need to correct it as soon as you can. In extreme cases, your water supplier may end up temporarily cutting you off.

So it’s important to make sure that you’re aware of all relevant plumbing regulations. Following these rules will mean that your plumbing is safe and secure and you don’t waste money.
Plumbing Regulations: Everything You Need to Know
If you need to some plumbing work done in your home, there are a few regulations that you need to follow.
There are several plumbing trade associations in the UK. Generally, they exist to drive industry standards and promote education and training.

If you’re looking for a plumber to do some work for you, it’s a good idea to check whether they’re a member of a trade association. A trade association membership makes it more likely that your plumber’s work will be at a high standard.

Here are 3 plumbing trade associations to be aware of:

Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE)

CIPHE was founded in 1906 and is a major trade association for the UK plumbing and heating industry. It offers membership to a range of professionals. These include consultants, public health engineers and practitioners. Some of CIPHE’s aims are to promote educations, training and professional standards.

Association of Plumbing & Heating Contractors (APHC)

APHC is one of the biggest plumbing trade associations in the UK. They’re a non-profit organisation and have been active in England and Wales since 1925. The association represents large and small businesses working on commercial and domestic projects. APHC’s main aims are to support professionals and encourage training and high standards.

Scottish and Northern Ireland Plumbing Employers’ Federation (SNIPEF)

SNIPEF is a plumbing trade association based in Scotland and Northern Ireland. It was established in 1923 and united many local plumbing trade associations. SNIPEF aims to offer professional and practical help and support to its members. It runs several services, including an Approved Certifier of Construction Scheme.

While trade association memberships can help you choose a reliable plumber, they’re not a guarantee of quality. There are plenty of professionals without a membership who do a great job. So when you’re deciding whether to hire a plumber, look at any customer reviews as well as trade association membership.
