This is very similar to the way that most boilers work.

Lots of people fit an air source heat pump because they want to heat their home in a more eco-friendly way. But is it the best choice for you? We’ve come up with the advantages and disadvantages of fitting an air-to-water air source heat pump to help you decide.

Air-to-water air source heat pump advantages

They’re an eco-friendly option

Fitting an air-to-water heat pump is a great move if you want to make your heating more eco-friendly. It’s not 100% carbon neutral, as it needs electricity to run. But compared to electric, oil or gas central heating, an air source heat pump is a much greener way to generate heat.

They’ll lower your energy bill

If you replace electric or LPG heating with an air-to-water heat pump, you’ll notice a significant reduction in your energy bills. This is because they extract heat from the air, which is a free, renewable source, rather than generating it. Depending on your current system, you could save up to £1,000 a year with a new heat pump. So installing an air-to-water heat pump is a great way to save money in the long-term.

They’ll heat both your home and water

Another advantage to fitting an air-to-water air source heat pump is that you can use it to heat both your home and water. This is great if you only want to rely on one heating system to heat your home. This is different to air-to-air heat pumps, which are rarely able to heat water.

You could earn money

You’ll also benefit from installing an air-to-water heat pump because it can earn you money through the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). This is a government scheme that offers financial incentives to property owners who install renewable heat technologies. Depending on when you install your heat pump, you could earn more than £800 a year. You can find out more about RHI here.

The disadvantages to air-to-water air source heat pumps

They run at lower temperatures

A downside to air-to-water heat pumps is that they deliver heat at lower temperatures than other heating systems. This means that they function best with underfloor heating and large radiators. If you only have small radiators or your home isn’t very well insulated, it may not be the best heating system for you.

They take up space

Air-to-water heat pumps are also not always ideal because they take up space. You’ll need an outside space where you can fit a unit to the wall or ground. There also needs to be a flow of air around it. So if you haven’t got a lot of outdoor space, this might be a problem.

They’re not an ideal replacement for gas

Although heating your home with an air-to-water heat pump can cost much less than electric heating or LPG, its costs aren’t so different compared to mains gas. Using a heat pump can often still be cheaper, but it’ll take you much longer to get back the money you invest on purchase and installation if you’re replacing a gas system.

So air-to-water heat pumps have a range of advantages, but they have some downsides too. They’re generally classed as an environmentally-friendly type of heating. This is because, although they need electricity to run, they heat your home using heat from the outside air, which is a form of renewable energy.

If you want to start heating your home using renewable energy, air-to-air heat pumps are certainly worth considering. But they’re not suitable for every property. To help you work out whether installing an air-to-air air source heat pump would benefit you, we’ve made a list of their pros and cons.

The pros to air-to-air air source heat pumps

They’re more eco-friendly than other types of heating

Lots of people decide to install air-to-air air source heat pumps because they’re eco-friendly. If you’ve currently got gas, electric or oil heating, swapping it for a heat pump could reduce your carbon emissions by around 1,000 – 7,000kg a year. So if reducing environmental damage is one of your priorities, an air-to-air source heat pump is worth considering.

They can lower your energy bill

Another benefit to air source heat pumps is that they can dramatically reduce your energy bills. This is mainly because air heat is a free energy source and fuels like electricity and oil aren’t. You will still have to pay for the electricity that your heat pump needs to run. But if you replace your electric or LPG heating system with an air source heat pump, you could save between £290 and £1,000 a year.

They’re all you need to heat your home

Air-to-air heat pumps are also popular because they completely take care of your home heating. Because they heat and distribute air rather than water, you don’t need to install things like radiators or underfloor heating for your pump to work. As long as there is air flow to all of your rooms, an air-to-air air source heat pump is all you need to warm up your home.

Air-to-air air source heat pump cons

They don’t provide hot water

Unfortunately, air-to-air air source heat pumps are not suitable for heating water. This means that if you install one, you’ll need another system for heating your water. If you’d prefer a heat pump that heats both your home and water, take a look at our article on air-to-water air source heat pumps.

They’re not eligible for RHI

Another downside to air-to-air heat pumps is that they’re not eligible for Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) funding. This means that unlike air-to-water air pumps, an air-to-air pump won’t give you the chance to earn money for the energy you generate.

They’re not an ideal replacement for gas

While replacing an electric or LPG heating system with an air source heat pump will save your money, it’s unlikely to do so if you have a gas system. This is because they cost very similar amounts to run. Plus, running a water heating system and an air-to-air heat pump might actually cost more than just having a gas system.

So an air-to-air air source heat pump can work really well for some people and properties but not so well for others. If you want to find out about other kinds of air source heat pump, take a look at our article on air-to-water pumps.
Air-to-Air Air Source Heat Pumps: the Pros and Cons
Air-to-air air source heat pumps heat properties by extracting heat from the outside air and circulating it with a fan.
Air source heat pumps are one of the UK’s most popular renewable technologies and work by taking a natural heat from the air and transferring to the home where it's used for space and hot water heating. Air source heat pumps can save you hundreds on your energy bills and generate you an income with the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).

Read on to find out about the RHI and how much you could earn through the scheme.

The Renewable Heat Incentive

The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a Government scheme that encourages homeowners and businesses to install renewable heat technologies through financial incentives.

The scheme works in a similar way to solar panels' feed-in tariff, paying for every unit of renewable heat you generate. The RHI will pay you for all the energy you generate, whether you use it or not.

The RHI will pay you quarterly for 7 years from your registration. With the scheme you'll get 7.63p/kWh, and you could earn up to £837 per year. This gives you a fantastic return on your investment on an air source heat pump.

Changes to the Renewable Heat Incentive

Before the general election in June 2017, the government consulted on proposed changes to the domestic RHI scheme. But because the election was called, the regulations couldn't be re-laid and come into force before, as Parliament was dissolved.

The proposed changes include the tariff going up to 10.18p/kWh, but this will be considered by the new government before anything comes into effect. We will keep this page updated so you'll know exactly what is going on, but don't hold back from installing an air source heat pump now. The scheme uses a degression system designed to manage the budget for the RHI, so if lots of people install a heat pump at the current rate you could end up getting a lower rate when you install your system. You have until 30th September to lock in the current rate.

How to apply for RHI

You can apply for RHI through the Ofgem website. If you have all the relevant information to hand when you apply, you should get an immediate decision. This is unless your application needs a manual review, which you can check on the Ofgem website here.

To apply for RHI, you will need your:

MCS installation certificate number for the heat pump

Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) number

Bank details

You can also get the RHI for ground source heat pumps, biomass heat and solar thermal panels. Installing an air source heat pump is one of them. You need to make sure you follow planning laws so your heating is legal.

Keep reading to find out everything you need to know about air source heat pump planning permission.

What’s planning permission?

Planning rules are a set of regulations that control how people develop land and property. Some types of building work are permitted developments. This means that you can do the work without checking with anyone that it’s ok.

However, if you want to do a job that isn’t a permitted development, you’ll need to get planning permission. This involves submitting a planning permission application to your local authority. They’ll review it and let you know whether you’re allowed to do the job. Sometimes they might tell you that you can do the job but only if you do it in a certain way.

Do I need planning permission to install an air source heat pump?

You don’t need to apply for planning permission to install an air source heat pump as long as you follow these rules:

It’s the only air source heat pump on the property

Its outdoor compressor unit isn’t bigger than 0.6 cubic metres

It’s not on a pitched roof

If it’s on a flat roof, it’s at least 1 metre from the roof edge

It’s at least 1 metre from the property boundary

It’s not on a wall that fronts a highway and is higher than ground story level

It complies with the Microgeneration Certification Scheme Planning Standards

There are also some additional rules if your property is on designated land, like a conservation area. In conservation areas or world heritage sites, the heat pump can’t be on a wall or roof that fronts a highway or closer to a highway than the building.

If you don’t follow all of these rules, or your property is listed, then you’ll need to apply for planning permission before you install your air source heat pump.

If you need to apply for planning permission or want further advice, you should contact your local authority. You should be able to find their details through your local council’s website. You can find out who your local council is here.
Do You Need Planning Permission for an Air Source Heat Pump?
It’s important to make sure you know whether you need planning permission before you install an air source heat pump.
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.1 -
