It runs on wood, usually in the form of logs or pellets. Biomass stoves heat the space around them and can be connected to a back boiler to heat water.

Biomass is considered a renewable fuel. So installing a biomass stove is a great idea if you want to reduce your carbon emissions.

Biomass stoves have lots of advantages but they aren’t suitable for everyone. To help you decide if a biomass stove is right for you, we’ve come up with a list of its pros and cons.

Pros

Smaller than a boiler

One advantage to biomass stoves is that they’re smaller than biomass boilers. Boilers can take up a significant amount of space but stoves are much more compact. So if you want to heat your home with biomass but don’t have space for a boiler, getting a stove could be a great solution.

Cheaper than a boiler

Biomass stoves are also popular because they’re cheaper than biomass boilers. According to the Energy Saving Trust, an automatic biomass boiler can cost anything between £9,000 and £21,000 to buy and install. Biomass stoves, on the other hand, start at around £250.

Range of different types

There are lots of different types of biomass stove to choose from. They come in different shapes and sizes. You can also choose your stove based on the type of fuel you want to use and how much money you want to spend. So you should be able to find a stove that suits your home and budget.

Compatible with a boiler

Lots of biomass stoves are compatible with boilers. You can fit your stove with a back boiler if you wish, which will use the heat your stove generates to heat your home and water.

Cons

Need fuel storage space

While biomass stoves take up less space than boilers, you still need room to store their fuel. The amount of space you’ll need will vary depending on the type of fuel you use and when you want to use your stove. However, it’s worth having around 6 square metres of indoor space for fuel storage.

Not suitable for heating large areas

Biomass stoves are ideal for heating rooms. However, they aren’t designed to heat whole houses unless fitted with a back boiler. So if you want to replace the heating system for your whole house, you’d probably be better off with a biomass boiler.

High maintenance

Another disadvantage to biomass stoves is that they’re high maintenance. Whilst there are lots of types of automatic biomass boilers around, biomass stoves usually need feeding manually. They also need emptying of ash a certain amount, depending on how much you use them. So if you want a low-hassle heating system, a biomass stove may not be the best choice.

Most types ineligible for funding

As biomass boilers are a form of renewable heating technology, if you have one you could be eligible to receive funding through the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). However, biomass stoves are only available for funding through the RHI if they are fuelled by pellets and connected to a back boiler. So choosing a biomass stove over a boiler could mean that you miss out on valuable funding.
Biomass Stoves: the Pros and Cons
A biomass stove is a great form of domestic heating. Because of the range of options, it can be hard to work out which sort of boiler is the best one for you.

A good way to start narrowing your choice down is to work out what fuel you want to use. You can then get a boiler that is compatible with your fuel choice.

The most common biomass fuels are wood pellets, wood chips and logs. When these are burned they produce heat, which your boiler uses to create hot water. Boilers that burn wood pellets are particularly popular with homeowners as they are compact and have high energy density.

To help you decide whether a pellet-fuelled boiler would suit you and your home, we’ve come up with a list of the fuel’s advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages

Compact

One advantage of wood pellets is that they’re compact. When pellets are made they are compressed, so you get the largest amount of fuel in the smallest possible space. This means that wood pellets take up less space than wood chips and logs – you can fit about 1 tonne of pellets into 1.5 square metres of space. So if you have limited storage or only have room for a small boiler, pellets may well be the fuel for you.

High energy density

Another benefit to wood pellets is that they have high energy density. This is measured in kWh/m³. The energy density of pellets is not as high as the energy density of wood chips. But wood pellets usually have a higher energy density than logs. So you will need to buy less pellets than logs to produce the same amount energy.

Compatible with automatic feeding systems

As wood pellets are all the same shape and size, they can be used with an automatic feeding system. This is known as a hopper. If you have a boiler with an automatic feeding system, you won’t need to worry about putting fuel into your boiler regularly. So if you choose to use pellets you can get a boiler with an automatic feeding system, which means all you’ll need to do to keep your boiler going is fill up the feeding system every so often.

Disadvantages

Not ideal for large systems

While wood pellets are great for smaller boilers, they’re not the best fuel you could use for a larger system (usually 60kW or over). For big installations it’s best to use wood chips as the boilers have plenty of fuel space and chips are more efficient than pellets. However, as most domestic biomass boiler installations are between 15-45kW, this may not be a problem for you.

If you decide that a pellet-fuelled biomass boiler is right for you, it’s a good idea to speak to a boiler engineer. They will be able to advise you on what type of boiler would be best for you and your home.
Would You Benefit From a Pellet-Fuelled Biomass Boiler?
Installing a pellet-fuelled biomass boiler is a great way to heat your home. So if you install a biomass boiler you could benefit from the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive scheme and reduce your carbon emissions.

If you’re thinking about installing a biomass boiler, you need to work out what kind of installation you need. A good way to do this is to start by considering which fuel you’d like to use. To help you make this decision we’ve made a list of the pros and cons of one popular biomass fuel: wood chips.

Pros

High energy density

Wood chips tend to be the most energy-efficient biomass fuel as they produce more kWh per kg than wood pellets and logs. So in terms of how much energy they produce when burned, wood chips come out on top.

Some types compatible with automatic feeding systems

Lots of people want a biomass boiler with an automatic feeding system as they require less attention than boilers that need refuelling on a regular basis. An advantage of wood chips is that some of them are compatible with automatic boiler feeding systems. If you want these, you’ll need to make sure you buy chips that are a uniform size and shape.

Need less storage space than logs

Another advantage to wood chips is that they need less storage space than logs. On average, 1 tonne of wood chips takes up just over 2m³. Logs, however, need double this amount of storage space to allow them to dry out. So wood chips are a better option if you have limited fuel storage space.

Cons

Uneconomical for smaller installations

Unfortunately, using wood chips to power your biomass boiler is usually uneconomical if you have an installation smaller than around 40-60kW. Wood chips can be difficult and expensive to transport and store, partly due to their high moisture content. Many manufacturers don’t produce chip-fuelled boilers smaller than 40kW because these difficulties mean that there isn’t a demand for them. Wood pellets are more commonly used to power smaller domestic biomass boilers.

If you decide that wood chips could be the best biomass fuel for you, a good next step would be to get the opinions of a few reliable boiler engineers. They will be able to give you advice on which biomass boilers could be best for you.
Wood Chips: Are They A Good Fuel For Your Biomass Boiler?
Wood chips are one type of fuel you can use to power your biomass boiler. You can get them all around the country and transporting them is an easy job. So if you choose to use logs, you’re not likely to run out of them anytime soon.

Possible to generate your own supply

Another benefit to logs is that it’s possible to generate your own supply. If you’re lucky enough to have wood on your land then it’s easy enough to cut it down to the right size for your boiler. Just remember to put your logs into storage to dry out before you use them.

Disadvantages

Need lots of storage space

A downside to logs is that they need lots of storage space. If stacked compactly then they shouldn’t need any more storage space than wood chips do. However, because logs have high moisture content they need to be spaced out to let them dry out. Sp the ideal log storage space is large and well-ventilated.

Incompatible with automatic feeding systems

Another disadvantage to logs is that they aren’t usually compatible with automatic feeding systems. This is because logs tend to be uneven shapes and sizes. Having a boiler that you have to feed manually is fine if you’re willing to put the effort in, but for many people it’s an unwelcome hassle.

Low energy density

Logs have relatively low energy density compared to wood pellets and chips. This means that they produce fewer kWh per kg than other biomass fuels. So if you’re after the most energy-efficient fuel possible, logs probably aren’t the best choice for you.

If you decide that you want a log-fuelled biomass boiler, it’s a good idea to get some professional advice. They can, however, have significant upfront installation costs. The RHI provides financial support to biomass boiler owners and generates some return on their investment.

The extra return that the RHI offers can be added to your potential savings on your fuel bill. Together this gives you the return that switching to a biomass boiler could offer you. The RHI offers a substantial increase to this return, so it’s worth applying for if you can. Read on to find out more about the Domestic RHI and how to check if your biomass boiler is eligible.

Is my biomass boiler eligible?

There are a variety of criteria that determine your eligibility for the RHI. Specialist renewable energy companies will be able to advise you on how your biomass boiler can meet these criteria.

Your biomass boiler must be installed by a Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) certified installer.

You must apply within 12 months of the commissioning date of your biomass boiler.

Biomass boilers must appear on Ofgem’s Product Eligibility List. This is to ensure they meet air quality and fuel type requirements.

You must use an approved sustainable fuel from the Biomass Suppliers List.

You must have made some financial contribution to the cost of the biomass boiler. It cannot have been fully covered by a grant or another source of funding that you do not have to pay back.

Your property must have a domestic Energy Performance Certificate that is less than 24 months old. If the EPC recommends extra loft and cavity wall insulation to your property, you must install it. Some exceptions apply, for example if you live in a conservation area.

How much could I get?

The current tariff for biomass boilers is 4.28p per kWh of heat. This tariff applies to applications submitted between 1 April 2017 and 30 June 2017.

Biomass boilers do not need metering if they heat your entire home. This means that your payments will be based on the estimated heat generation of your boiler. You may need metering if your boiler is not supplying all the heat needs of your property. Even if you do not need metering, optional metering and service packages are available from certain manufacturers. Taking one of these packages will add £200 per year to your RHI payments.

For example, if your biomass boiler produced 15,000kWh of heat per year, you would receive yearly RHI payments of £642. This works out to £160.50 per quarter. These payments last for 7 years. Your total payment from the RHI would be £4,494.

These tariff rates are subject to a yearly adjustment in line with the Consumer Price Index.

Changes to the RHI

Some changes to the RHI have been proposed by the government. These are expected to be implemented in summer 2017, but have not currently received parliamentary approval.

The proposed tariff change for biomass boilers is an increase to 6.54p per kWh. This rate will apply to those who apply to the scheme after 14 December 2016. This means you won’t lose out on the rate increase if you apply to the RHI now.

There is also a proposed heat demand limit for biomass boilers. This effectively adds a cap on the highest amount of RHI payments a biomass boiler can receive. This cap is proposed to be 25,000kWh. If you do have a property with a higher heat demand than this cap, you can still apply for RHI payments. You just won’t receive RHI payments for heat that your boiler produces above this cap.

For more information about the RHI, see Ofgem’s website.
The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) and Biomass Boilers
The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a government scheme that pays you back for the heat that your biomass boiler produces.
