Although nowadays there are other ways of picking up TV channels, aerials remain necessary and very much in demand.

Aerials work by receiving signals through the air and transmitting them to the TV they’re connected to. There are lots of different types around, like indoor, outdoor and multi-directional aerials. Indoor aerials are very common and are well worth considering if you need to invest in a new aerial.

To help you work out if an indoor aerial would be a good purchase for you, we’ve come up with a list of their advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages of indoor aerials

Low cost

If you want to use an indoor aerial, you need to start off by buying it. But after this an indoor aerial is basically free. You can install most indoor aerials yourself and won’t need to pay a subscription fee, like cable and satellite users. There are now lots of channels that you can pick up using an aerial, so they’re well worth the little you’ll pay.

Versatile

Another great thing about indoor aerials is that they’re versatile. You can put them pretty much anywhere – on top of the TV, on a shelf or mounted on a wall. Plus, they can work well in both rural and urban areas.

Disadvantages of indoor aerials

Less channel choice

Unfortunately, if you’re going to install an indoor aerial then you’re going to have to accept that you’ll have limited channel choice. You can access a high number of channels using an aerial, but cable and satellite networks provide far more. So if there’s a channel you’re dying to get, it’s a good idea to check whether you can access it with an aerial or if you need to invest in a cable connection or a satellite dish.

Susceptible to interference

Another downside to indoor aerials is that they’re susceptible to interference. The walls and ceilings of a building can prevent them from receiving signals properly. Other signals in your home can also cause interference. If you live in a rural area that already has fairly weak signals then an indoor aerial might not be the best choice.

So an indoor aerial can be a great, low-cost way to get TV in your home. But if you want to learn about other types of aerial, see our information on outdoor and multi-directional aerials.
Indoor Aerials: the Advantages and Disadvantages
Indoor aerials a very popular and can be found it lots of homes around the UK. They sit outside, usually on building roofs, pick up signals and transmit them to your TV. You can install an outdoor aerial wherever you live, but they’re particularly popular in rural areas. This is because they tend to the best way to get TV signal in more isolated areas.

Outdoor aerials have some great advantages but aren’t for everyone. To help you work out whether an outdoor aerial is right for you, we’ve made a list of their pros and cons.

Pros

Pick up weaker signals

A great advantage to outdoor aerials is that they’re good at picking up weaker signals as well as stronger ones. This means that if you live in an area where there are lots of other signals or very weak television signals, your TV picture is likely to be better than if you use an indoor aerial.

Less susceptible to interference

Outdoor aerials are also a good option because they’re less susceptible to interference than indoor aerials. As they’re installed outside of your home, outdoor aerials aren’t affected by the interference problems that walls and ceilings cause indoor aerials.

Cons

Bulky

One downside to outdoor aerials is that they’re bulky. They’re usually quite a lot bigger than indoor aerials. Plus, they come with mounting hardware and a cable that needs to stretch from the aerial to your TV or signal distributor. If you want something smaller, an indoor aerial is probably a better choice for you.

Difficult to install

Another disadvantage to outdoor aerials is that they’re tricky to install. If you want to get the strongest and highest quality TV picture possible, you really need to install your outdoor aerial as high up as possible. This is why most people fit their aerial on a roof or tall pole. So unless you have the right tools and safety equipment and are used to working at height, it’s best not to try to install an outdoor aerial yourself. A professional installer will not only install your aerial safely, they’ll also know where to put it to get the best possible signal.

Indoor aerials, on the other hand, are easy to set up and rarely require professional installation.

So outdoor aerials have a range of pros and cons. A common conundrum is whether to get a directional or multi-directional aerial. The best one to get depends on several factors, including where you live and whether you want an indoor or outdoor aerial.

Keep reading to get all the information you need to help you decide whether to get a directional or multi-directional aerial.

Directional aerials

Directional aerials can only pick up TV signals from one direction. The idea is that when you install your directional aerial, you point it in the direction that the strongest signals are coming from. Directional aerials are usually outdoor aerials.

Advantages

Directional aerials are ideal if you live in a rural area. The strongest signals are likely to be coming from your nearest town or built-up area, so you can just point your aerial in that direction. Directional aerials are long range so can provide a high-quality picture.

Disadvantages

The downside to directional aerials is they’re not ideal if you live in an urban area. In towns and cities there tend to be signals coming from multiple directions at the same time. Because a directional aerial can only pick up signals from one direction, you’ll end up missing out on a lot of signals if you have one. This could mean that your picture is poor quality or you miss out on some channels.

Multi-directional aerials

Multi-directional aerials can pick up TV signals coming from lots of different directions. They can do this simultaneously and pick them all up an equal amount. Most indoor aerials and lots of outdoor aerials are multi-directional.

Advantages

Multi-directional aerials are ideal for people living in urban areas. Because they pick up signals from all directions you’ll be able to pick up all possible channels being transmitted in your area. Plus, you should get a quality picture.

Disadvantages

Unfortunately, because they’re not specifically concentrated in one direction, multi-directional aerials have a fairly limited range. So if you live in a rural area where signals are transmitted from fairly far away, you’d probably be better off with a directional aerial. Otherwise, your picture will be poor and you may miss out on channels.

You should now be one step closer to knowing whether you need a directional or multi-directional aerial. There are a range of free to air channels that you can access using a satellite dish, called Freesat TV, but to view most of them you'll need to subscribe to a TV package for a monthly fee.

There are a couple of different types of satellite dish to choose from depending on your circumstances. Take a look at our guide to see which one is right for you.

Stationary satellite dish

Stationary satellite dishes are static dishes. The installer will need to physically align it with a geosynchronous satellite so that it can receive the signal. They come in lots of different sizes.

Pros

Can pick up a good number of signals

As there are lots of different sizes of stationary satellite dishes available, you can choose one that picks up the right amount of signal for you. The larger the dish, the greater number of signals it can pick up, so speak to an installer to find out what size dish you need.

Cons

Can only pick up satellites that are close together

Stationary dishes can only pick up satellites that are close together without being manually adjusted, so you will need to check with your installer to see if this will be a problem.

Motorised satellite dish

Motorised dishes, like the name suggests, have a motor inside that allows them to move and pick up different satellite signals. Most receivers can use motorised dishes, so they are a potential option for most homes.

Pros

Can pick up thousands of channels

Since the dish can rotate to pick up different signals, you can access thousands of channels. About one thousand of those channels are free from Freesat!

Cons

Larger than other dishes

The minimum diameter for a motorised dish is 80cm, and you'll probably need one with a diameter of 90cm to 1 metre for the best results. This makes it difficult for people with smaller homes to have them installed.

So which satellite dish is right for you? Or perhaps you've decided a normal aerial would suit you better? This means that tradespeople who install aerials do not have to hold any accreditations or certifications. However, some installers will hold qualifications. These are a great way to give you confidence that the installer has the knowledge and skills to install your aerial to a high standard. High-quality aerial installations will last longer and give you great TV signal. Read on to find out more about the different qualifications and certifications that aerial installers may hold.

Qualifications

There are several qualifications that aerial installers may hold. City and Guilds 2363 is a qualification which provides training in aerial installation. It covers health and safety for working at height, as well as digital signal knowledge. There are also NVQ qualifications available in aerial installation.

In addition, there are specific qualifications for working at height. If your aerial installation is particularly high up, you may want to look for an installer who holds a qualification for working at height.

Aerial installers do not have to hold these qualifications. Many good quality installers will not have them, especially if they started working before the qualifications became popular. Always ask to see examples of installers’ recent work.

Certifications

There are two licensing bodies which certify aerial installers. The Confederation of Aerial Industries (CAI) is one of these bodies. They offer training and a product certification scheme. The CAI operates across the entire of the audio, video and data industry. They also certify cables and aerials.

The other licensing body is the Registered Digital Installer Licencing Body (RDI-LB). The RDI-LB offer certification to aerial installers. This means that these installers can describe themselves as Registered Digital Installers. It also means they can use the digital tick logo.

Both of these licensing bodies assess their members to make sure that their skills and knowledge are up to scratch. This includes making sure that their installers meet British Standards as well as the licensing bodies' own standards. They also check that their installers have the correct level of public liability insurance.

So now you know about the qualifications and certifications that aerial installers may hold. If you are looking to get an aerial installed then Quotatis can help. Aerials are usually installed on the roofs of buildings. You can fix aerials to either the chimney stack or the gable end of the roof. Generally, you will not need to apply for planning permission to install an aerial on the roof of your home, or elsewhere on your property. Aerials are covered under permitted development rights. This means you can install an aerial without applying for planning permission. However, there are restrictions on the size and type of aerials that you can install under permitted development. Read on to find out more about these restrictions.

What is planning permission?

Planning permission is a system that controls building work in an area. The system means that for some kinds of work, you need to apply for permission from the local authority. The planning permission system makes sure that building work is safe and appropriate for the area. Local authorities enforce the planning permission system.

Some types of work are automatically covered by permitted development rights. These rights mean that this kind of work will not need planning permission.

Permitted development rights and aerials

Aerials are covered by permitted development rights. This means that you will not need to apply to the local authority for planning permission. There are restrictions on the number and size of aerials that you can install under permitted development rights. If you want to install an aerial that does not meet these restrictions, you will need to apply for planning permission.

If you live in a flat, these restrictions apply to the entire building. These restrictions apply to both satellite dishes and traditional aerials.

There are two categories of restrictions. The first applies to houses up to 15 metres high, and the second applies to houses above 15 metres.

Houses up to 15 metres high

Aerials installed on these houses must meet the following restrictions:

There can be no more than 2 aerials on the property

If you are installing 1 antenna, it can be no wider than 1 metre

If you are installing 2 antennas, 1 can be no wider than 1 metre, the other can be no wider than 60cm

The cubic capacity of an antenna cannot be more than 35 litres

An antenna attached to a chimney stack can be no wider than 60cm

An antenna mounted on the roof with a chimney stack should not stick out above the roof any higher than 60cm above the chimney stack

If an antenna is mounted on the roof and there is no chimney stack, the antenna should not stick out above the roof

Houses over 15 metres high

Aerials installed on these types of houses must meet these restrictions:

There can be no more than 4 aerials on the property

Each aerial can be no wider than 130cm

The cubic capacity of each aerial is less than 35 litres

An antenna mounted onto a chimney stack can be no wider than 60cm

An antenna mounted on the roof cannot stick up any higher than 300cm from the highest point of the roof

You will also need to make sure that your aerial installation does not break any other laws or regulations. For example, aerials cannot overhang onto a neighbour’s property.

Conservation areas and listed buildings

In conservation areas, the above restrictions apply. There is one extra restriction:

You cannot install an aerial on a chimney, wall or roof which faces or is visible from a road

The way this restriction works can be different in some areas. It’s usually worth checking with your local authority if you’re not sure.

If you live in a listed building, you will usually need to apply for listed building consent to install an aerial. Speak to your local authority for advice on this.

The restrictions on aerial installations can be difficult. It’s usually best to speak to an experienced aerial installer. They can offer you advice on the best way to get a perfect TV signal while still meeting the permitted development rights restrictions. If you need an aerial which does not meet these restrictions, you can apply for planning permission. Aerial installation companies will be able to help you with this process.
Do I Need Planning Permission for Aerials?
You will not usually need to apply for planning permission to install an aerial.
