When you’re picking an aerial for your home you have lots of decisions to make. A common conundrum is whether to get a directional or multi-directional aerial. The best one to get depends on several factors, including where you live and whether you want an indoor or outdoor aerial.

Keep reading to get all the information you need to help you decide whether to get a directional or multi-directional aerial.

Directional aerials can only pick up TV signals from one direction. The idea is that when you install your directional aerial, you point it in the direction that the strongest signals are coming from. Directional aerials are usually outdoor aerials.

Directional aerials are ideal if you live in a rural area. The strongest signals are likely to be coming from your nearest town or built-up area, so you can just point your aerial in that direction. Directional aerials are long range so can provide a high-quality picture.

The downside to directional aerials is they’re not ideal if you live in an urban area. In towns and cities there tend to be signals coming from multiple directions at the same time. Because a directional aerial can only pick up signals from one direction, you’ll end up missing out on a lot of signals if you have one. This could mean that your picture is poor quality or you miss out on some channels.

Multi-directional aerials can pick up TV signals coming from lots of different directions. They can do this simultaneously and pick them all up an equal amount. Most indoor aerials and lots of outdoor aerials are multi-directional.

Multi-directional aerials are ideal for people living in urban areas. Because they pick up signals from all directions you’ll be able to pick up all possible channels being transmitted in your area. Plus, you should get a quality picture.

Unfortunately, because they’re not specifically concentrated in one direction, multi-directional aerials have a fairly limited range. So if you live in a rural area where signals are transmitted from fairly far away, you’d probably be better off with a directional aerial. Otherwise, your picture will be poor and you may miss out on channels.
