But before you get started, you need to make sure that you\u2019re following any relevant legislation.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re planning to build a conservatory in a conservation area, there are a number of regulations you need to be aware of. <\/p>\n<p>Read on to find out more about conservation areas, and how to build your conservatory in one.<\/p>\n<h3>What\u2019s a conservation area?<\/h3>\n<p>A conservation area is an area of architectural or historic interest that is protected by law. There are lots of different types of conservation area. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The centres of historic towns and cities<\/li>\n<li>18th and 19th-century suburbs<\/li>\n<li>Country houses in historic parks<\/li>\n<li>Fishing and mining villages<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Local authorities protect these areas by limiting property alteration, tree felling and demolition work in them. <\/p>\n<h3>Can I build a conservatory in a conservation area?<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/conservatories.quotatis.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/06\/400x400-conservatory-2-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"conservatory or extension\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-522\" \/><br \/>\nYou can build a conservatory in a conservation area. You can even do it without planning permission, but you do need to follow a number of regulations. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Not building your conservatory on the side of your property<\/li>\n<li>Ensuring your conservatory extends no further than 4 metres away from the rear wall of your house if it\u2019s detached, or 3 metres away if it\u2019s attached<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For a full list of conservatory planning regulations, see the government&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planningportal.co.uk\/info\/200130\/common_projects\/10\/conservatories\">Planning Portal<\/a> website.<\/p>\n<p>Planning guidelines say that you need to apply for planning permission if you\u2019re building an extension on a property in a conservation area, and you want it to be more than one story. You also need to apply for planning permission if you want to put exterior cladding on your extension. <\/p>\n<p>Conservatories are single story and don\u2019t need exterior cladding. So if you want to build an extension in a conservation area, but don\u2019t want to apply for planning permission, a conservatory is a good choice.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/conservatories.quotatis.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/05\/Conserv200-9.jpg\" alt=\"Conserv200-9\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-190\" \/><br \/>\nOf course you can always apply for planning permission if you do want to build a conservatory on the side of your property, or further away from your rear wall. But you\u2019ll have to wait for permission to be granted before you start work.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you think your conservatory doesn\u2019t need planning permission, we recommend that you speak to your local planning authority before you begin building. This is because conservation area regulations can vary between different planning authorities and change over time.<\/p>\n<h3>How do I contact my local planning authority or apply for planning permission?<\/h3>\n<p>To find out your local planning authority\u2019s contact details, take a look at their website.
