When it comes to making your home more energy efficient, condensing central heating boilers are the popular style. With a non-condensing boiler the efficiency will be around 75% which could see you spending an extra £300 every year on heating bills.

Condensing central heating boilers, however, have a heightened efficiency and you would see efficiencies stretch towards the 90% mark. The difference in efficiency levels is purely down to how much heat is extracted from waste gases, rather than being lost.
With a condensing boiler, less hot gas can escape and be lost in the flue. Instead it’s captured and used to provide heat for your property.
This efficiency is created by having two exchangers. Firstly, in condensing central heating boilers heat will rise upwards into the exchanger before being diverted to a second exchanger. This means even more heat can be taken in. Once the hot gas leaves your boiler it’s only at a temperature as low as 55°C, rather than 180°C typical in a regular boiler.
When it comes to condensing boilers, the most popular style by far is the combi boiler. There are two reasons it has become such a popular feature in UK homes. Firstly, it’s small and compact, saving room in the home and can be easily fitted to a kitchen wall. And secondly, combi central heating boilers provide hot water whenever it’s needed, without use of a water storage tank.
With an older boiler you’re more likely to see a storage tank installed in the loft or perhaps the airing cupboard. Installing a combi will open up space and bills can be reduced annually by £300.
