If you’re pretty good at DIY and you’re feeling confident enough, it can seem like a good idea to fit your own lock on your door. But should you?
Legally, there’s nothing stopping you. But if you want your home to be safe and secure, it might be worth thinking again.
Locksmiths are skilled and trained
The reason lots of people ask locksmiths to fit their locks is because they’re experts in the trade.
Experienced locksmiths know which size and type of lock you need and whether it meets your home insurance requirements.
Don’t think you can rely on DIY stores to give you the answers to your questions.
Remember, locksmiths are trained in fitting locks and have good product knowledge. DIY store staff may have the product knowledge but if they’re not qualified locksmiths, it might not be a good idea to follow their advice.
Lock snapping
Are you capable of fitting a lock that will prevent lock snapping? Do you know which locks fit the standards that you need?
Some cylinder locks are susceptible to a type of crime called lock snapping. This involves literally snapping the lock in two. There’s often not much material around the lock to make it strong, hence why they are easy to break.
These types of cylinder locks may be easier to install but they also leave you at risk of crime. If you fit your own lock and it’s a simple cylinder lock, your home won’t be as safe as if you asked a locksmith to fit an anti-snap cylinder.
So should you fit your own lock?
Yes, it will be a bit more expensive to ask a locksmith to fit your locks for you, but it will be cheaper in the long run. If your lock doesn’t meet your home insurance requirements and you are burgled, you’ll end up forking out a lot more to replace all your stolen belongings.
It’s a good idea to hire a locksmith registered with the Master Locksmith Association. You can visit their website to find a registered locksmith in your area.
