10 Ways to Make Your Move Stress-Free

Moving home will always seem like hard work, but if you feel organised and ready for when the big day comes everything will go much more smoothly. Follow our top 10 ways to make your move stress-free so you can sit back and relax in your new home sooner.

1. Be prepared

Start planning for your move months in advance. You don’t want to move clutter that you could get rid of from one house to the other, so use the months beforehand to sort out your belongings that you don’t need anymore.

Don’t leave finding boxes to the last minute either, or you could end up spending a lot of money. Ask your local shops and look online for freebies.

Another vital preparation tip is to make up a box of all the essentials you’ll need for organising your move. Fill it with duct tape, masking tape, newspaper, bubble wrap and pens. Then you’ll know where everything is and can find it all in an instant.

2. Roll your clothes

If you roll your clothes instead of fold them, you’ll save so much room. Just ensure that you don’t make boxes too heavy.

3. Use your bedding

Instead of just packing away your bedding, use them as wrapping and padding for delicate items. Another great hack is using two fitted sheets on your mattress whilst you’re transporting it so the mattress keeps nice and clean.

4. Roll away

Pack heavy items such as books and ornaments in rolling suitcases. This way you won’t strain your back trying to lift heavy items.

5. Pack a first night box

Let’s face it, you’re probably not going to go through all your boxes on the first night in your new home. Pack a box of essentials, like toilet paper, eating utensils, chargers and supplies for babies and pets. You might want some clothes for the night and the next day too.

6. Use your loo roll middles

Toilet roll middles are perfect for keeping all your electronic cables together. Simply label them and then you can pack them away, ready to be plugged in when you start unpacking.

7. Colour code

Ensure you label all your boxes on the top and the side. Colour code them for different rooms so you can get organised the moment you walk through your new front door.

8. Hire moving equipment

If you’re doing the move on your own, it’s well worth hiring or buying equipment to help you. Dollies and hand trucks will help you move everything without hurting your back, and if you do buy them you’ll not have any trouble selling them on afterwards.

9. Plastic wrap solves everything

Wrap an entire chest of drawers in plastic wrap and tape it together. You’ve successfully packed away all your belongings without having to do much at all!

10. Use up your food

In the last few weeks in your old home, don’t be tempted to go out and do a food shop. Try to use up everything you have, especially things that can cause a mess like flour and frozen food that might not survive the journey.

If you follow these tips, you’ll have a stress-free move and you can get comfortable in your new home in no time.
