This provides a small space between two layers of bricks. It provides some thermal protection but that can be improved on. Homes without wall insulation can lose up to 35% of their heat.

To check if you have a cavity wall the best way is to look at the pattern of the bricks on the external wall. If the bricks are laid length-ways with one brick laid to cover the join of the bricks below – that’s a cavity wall. They have the equipment, and the expertise to judge exactly how much material is required to give your home good insulation.

The method is to inject the insulant into the gap between the two skins of the wall.

The material most normally used is foam, alternatives include mineral or glass fibre mixed with a binder or beads or granules.

All the materials are treated to be water resistant to prevent damp entering the building, and are also fire retardant.

These forms of insulation should come with a 25-year guarantee issued by CIGA (Cavity Insulation Guarantee Agency) so shop around.

A question to ask would-be installers is does the material and work comply to British Standards or the British Board of Agrement (BBS). If they don’t – go elsewhere.

Cavity wall tips

Any problems with condensation need to be tackled before insulation is installed.

Walls must be dry before the work can be carried out, sealing in damp won’t solve anything.

You need a professional to check out what is causing the damp and how it can be eradicated – that includes inspecting damp courses to see if they are sound and fit for purpose.

It is vital not to cover any ventilation already provided in the building and to check if additional sources are recommended by the installer.

How long will it take to install cavity wall insulation?

The whole process shouldn’t take more than two or three hours, depending on the size of the property and access to the exterior walls.

The installer drills holes at regular intervals and injects the insulant through them. Once in place the holes are plugged – leaving little evidence that anything has been done.

How you can help the installer

A sensible move is you tell your neighbours what is going on and, if applicable, advise them to move any cars so that they don’t get covered with dust.

Neighbours would probably also appreciate being warned that there will be some drilling going of for a little while.

Removing pictures or other valuables that might be dislodged through the vibration is recommended.

But what kind of materials do i use?

There are a range of materials available for lofts, solid and cavity walls – lets take a look at some of them.

Insulating your loft
You may already have some insulation in your loft – but modern recommendations say that at least 270mm (8 inches) is needed, rather that the much thinner layers used in the past.

The first two types we look at are often classed as quilt insulation, as that is quite literally what they do – form a quilt over the floor of the loft.

Mineral wool
This is the type of product most people think of when talking about insulating a loft.

Modern versions of this material have good environmental credentials as they are made from recycled glass. The product is spun into fine strands of wool treated with a binding agent. It is fire resistant, will not rot and discourages vermin.

Easy to install a competent DIYer will be able to lay the material. The recommended way is to roll the mineral wool between the joists and then cover with a second layer the other way to cover the joists themselves – as this is an area where most heat is lost.

Anyone using this material should wear masks and gloves to protect themselves.

See the general rules at the end of this section for safety tips.

Sheep’s wool
A product that is gaining in popularity as people look for environmentally-friendly solutions to insulating their homes.

Sheep’s wool has declined in popularity in the fashion market, so its alternative role as an insulation material is making use of a natural product that was being thrown away and wasted.

Laid in the same way as mineral wool, it doesn’t have the skin irritation problems that some materials can give – and its treatment to make it fireproof and insect repellent make it a safe option.

Blown insulation
This needs an expert installer as it requires specialist equipment to blow loose granules onto the floor.

Its advantages are that it can be used in areas that are hard to access by other methods.

Its down-side is that if the loft is to be used for storage it does need to be covered by boards to stop it being trampled on – or even blow about if the loft has draughts.

The materials used are either granules of mineral fibres or paper.

Granular insulation
Like blown insulation this needs to be covered by boards if the loft is to be used for storage.

Using this method, granules of recycled paper, vermiculite, mineral wool or cork are quite literally tipped onto the floor and then spread around.

Multifoil
This material is different from the others we have looked at, as it isn’t laid on the floor. It is inserted between the roof rafters – a good idea if the loft is to be converted to a room, as it lets heat rise from the rooms below to help warm the space.

Multifoil lives up to its name – it is layers of foil sandwiched together with foam or soft dry fibres and then bound together. This method creates air pockets to trap heat while the foil reflects warmth back into the room.

Boards
If you are thinking floorboards – forget it! Like multifoil these boards are inserted between the rafters.

They are constructed of polystyrene extruded to become a rigid board. Boards are fitted with screws or nails, but there must be a gap between the roof tiles and the insulation to prevent problems with condensation.

They are a solution if the loft is to become a room, so are a good option while undertaking renovation work or even on a new build property.

Important tips to remember when insulating a loft

The idea of insulating a loft is to keep your home warmer, not to create problems so just read the following tips and avoid the pitfalls, while also gaining more benefits:

Air vents must be left clear to avoid problems with condensation or damp

To prevent overheating – keep electric cables, wiring and light fittings uncovered

If your loft has better insulation, your water pipes are at more risk of becoming frozen so ensure that they are well lagged

Install a board walkway to the water tank to avoid damage caused by walking on the insulation

Protect insulation between joists if anything is to stand on it – boards beneath the item prevents the insulation from becoming squashed and less efficient, and

As you look back at a job well done and close the loft hatch – was it insulated and draught-proofed as well?

Tips to help you save time and/or money

Shop around for an accredited or approved installer.

Apply for a grant for loft or cavity wall insulation.

When looking at external wall insulation for sold walls check with your local authority planners to see if it objects to any kinds of cladding, especially if you live in a conservation area.

If you plan to take on insulation work yourself in your home check first how that affects grants.

If you live in a house less than 10-years old check out your paperwork, as there is every chance the house already has things like cavity wall insulation

With the introduction of HIPs packs, having certificates to show that your home is well insulated is a real plus when selling the property.

Ensure that ventilation is good so that you don’t cause problems with damp.

In lofts

Keep electric cables, wiring and light fittings uncovered to prevent overheating
Ensure water pipers are well lagged, as it will be a colder place after insulation has been installed

Install a board walkway to the water tank to avoid damage by walking on and crushing insulation on the floor, and

Don’t forget to insulate and draught-proof the loft hatch.

The cost
The cost of loft or wall insulation will depend on the size of the area covered and the materials used. Do shop around for several quotes always ensuring that any supplier guarantees their work and it does have the BSI or similar standards that approved businesses work to.

Grants
The Government is keen to save energy and cut harmful emissions to the atmosphere, so it has made grants available for loft and cavity wall insulation.

It has set targets for major energy providers such as British Gas, NPower and Eon to cut carbon emissions by 2011.

The grants scheme works through an organisation called EnergyLink – and all householders and landlords could see their bills cut by up to 70 per cent! Go to EnergyLink’s website www.freeinsulation.co.uk for further information.

Anyone over the age of 70 or in receipt of certain benefits, tax credits or allowances could be entitled to a 100 per cent insulation grant – so it is well worth checking out.

EnergyLink works through accredited installers to carry out the work and the organisation then bills the supply companies for the cost,

The supply companies and accredited energy installers will all have information on grants but check out for yourself to see how you could benefit.

Go to:
www.freeinsulation.co.uk
www.directgov.uk
www.energysavingstrust.ore
www.government-grants.co.uk

It is also worth contacting your local authority to see if help is available through them. Landlords can contact EnergyLink direct or go to www.hmrc.gov.uk.

Savings
The Energy Saving Trust gives guidelines to the potential annual savings on fuel bills that can be made, they are:

Cavity wall insulation – up to £115

Solid wall insulation – up to £400

Loft insulation – up to £150.

They are all substantial savings and, as fuel prices rise, will help householders save even more energy and money.

Saving the planet
When we talk about savings we automatically thing of our bank balances. But it would be hard not to have heard about the harm we are all doing to our world and atmosphere by using too much energy.

You can play your part in cutting harmful emissions – the sensible way to do that is to use less heat. Having a well insulated home does just that.

A fact to remember – the Energy Saving Trust calculates that the average UK household creates 5.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) every year, all helping to pollute the atmosphere.

In 2007 142 million tonnes of carbon dioxide was created from the energy used to light, heat and power our homes – 26 per cent of the UK total for the year.

Homes built since the mid 1930s have probably been built with a cavity wall.
