The scheme sets standards for various products like doors and windows and encourages rigorous testing.<\/p>\n<p>The best way to make sure that a window is secure is to choose one with the Secured by Design pass mark. This means it\u2019s got a number of security features and has been properly tested.<\/p>\n<h3>Window security features<\/h3>\n<p>There are several different features of double glazing and windows which will improve their security. However, your current windows may already have some of these. If you don\u2019t have any of these, it might be time to consider upgrading your windows to a more secure model.<\/p>\n<h4>Security glass<\/h4>\n<p>There are several different types of secure glazing. Laminated, toughened or security glass are all resistant to smashing.<\/p>\n<p>In general, though, secure windows force would-be burglars to break the glass, which makes noise and increases the chance of getting caught. Often a burglar will give up rather than smash through glass.<\/p>\n<h4>Locking mechanisms<\/h4>\n<p>There are different locking mechanisms which provide security to double glazed windows. All windows accessible from the ground floor should have a key operated lock.<\/p>\n<p>More secure locking mechanisms use multipoint locks and shoot bolt locks for enhanced security.<\/p>\n<h4>Internal beading<\/h4>\n<p>Internal beading is a method of fitting the glass to the frame. Glass which uses internal beading can&#8217;t be levered out of the frame from the outside. Because of this, it&#8217;s a more secure type of double glazing.<\/p>\n<p>Most new windows are internally beaded, while lots of old windows use an older design. Usually, this design does not have the same level of security.<\/p>\n<h4>Frame construction<\/h4>\n<p>The strength of the frame construction is also important to the security of double glazing. Choose windows with tough frames. Aluminium, wood and uPVC can all be very secure. It&#8217;s best to make a decision based on the quality of the frame rather than the material.<\/p>\n<p>All of these features of double glazing security are important.
