It’s really important to get your bathroom lighting right. It needs to be both practical and atmospheric – a combination that’s often quite hard to achieve, especially if you’ve got a certain design in mind.

We’ve put together some tips to help you get on the right track and pick the best bathroom lighting for your home.

When you’re designing your bathroom lighting, the first thing you need to do is let in as much light as possible. Natural light is important – it makes us feel good and is the best light to apply makeup, floss or shave in as it’s the light we spend most of the day in.

If you’re building your bathroom from scratch, make sure that you position your windows in places that let as much light in as possible. Or if you’re renovating your existing bathroom, ensure that your blinds or curtains fold away as compactly as possible so they don’t block any natural light when they’re open.

One of the most important types of lighting you need in your bathroom is task lighting. This is the lighting that you’ll usually find positioned around mirrors and that help you see yourself clearly.

Task lighting is important because it’s a light source between you and the mirror. Without it, light sources to the side and behind you will create shadows and make it hard for you to do things like shave or look after your teeth.

You can create effective task lighting by installing a pair of sconces (wall mounted lights) on either side of your mirror. Or if you want something a bit more specialised, get yourself a makeup mirror. Avoid fitting any lighting above your mirror as this will also create shadows and often make people looking in the mirror look older.

Once you’ve got your natural and task lighting sorted, you need to light the rest of your bathroom. For times when there’s limited natural light and you don’t need to use a mirror, you need sufficient lighting for the rest of your room.

You can choose to light your bathroom with one central ceiling fixture or multiple light sources on your ceiling and/or your upper walls. If you want to use decorative shades or light features, you may find you need multiple fixtures to make your bathroom lighting strong enough.

Warm, soft tones are often the best shades of bathroom lighting to go for. But make sure it isn’t too dim – you don’t want to make guests try to navigate the room in near darkness.

These three tips should help you create bathroom lighting that’s both atmospheric and practical. But remember that all bathrooms are different and that what might work for some rooms won’t work for others.
