The Government ran a boiler scrappage scheme to promote the replacement of inefficient heating systems. By replacing a boiler, homeowners can save up to £310 each year and escape fuel poverty.

The official scheme ran from 2010 to 2013 and although it remains closed, some companies do offer their own version of the scrappage scheme.

When did the boiler scrappage scheme finish?

Scotland: The boiler scrappage scheme closed in March 2013 in Scotland.

England: March 26. All 125,000 boiler vouchers had been taken up so the scheme closed for new applicants.

Wales: The Wales boiler scrappage scheme is now closed.

Should I still replace my boiler without the scheme?

Replacing an inefficient boiler is still definitely worthwhile. Boilers account for around 60% of the average household energy bills, so it’s important to ensure high levels of efficiency. In fact, replacing your boiler could save up to £310 every year. On top of this you’ll reduce the risk of a boiler breakdown in the heart of winter, when you need heat most.

The Heating and Hot Water Industry Council say the average cost of a new boiler would be around £2,500, but of course prices will range depending on the system and brand.

Are any other boiler discounts available?

The Green Deal scheme is the only major incentive still open for boiler replacements. The Government is offering £310 cash back to those who have a new system installed. To qualify for this discount you could need to have other insulation such as loft lagging or wall cavity filling.

Which boiler and installer should I choose?

The national brands such as Bosch and Baxi are still highly favoured in the UK with lengthy guarantees on an installation. Which? have also reported local companies to offer better deals for homeowners so you may be better off using an independent tradesmen to actually fit the boiler.

What’s important though is to always compare boiler prices and ensure of getting the best deal in your area. Receive a full breakdown of the cost and ask if something can be put in for free, such as a boiler service for 12 months’ time.
