1. Unplug all unnecessary devices<\/h3>\n

Before you leave, go around your home and unplug all non-essential appliances. That means your TV, computer, heaters and even your oven. If your TV has a standby light, it will still be using the electricity, so unplugging it will help you save money on your bills too.<\/p>\n

2. Ask a neighbour or friend to check in<\/h3>\n

It’s a great idea to have a friend to check in on your property every now and again if you’re away for a long period of time. They can water your plants or collect your post, and while they’re there they can check on your appliances that you’ve had to leave on.<\/p>\n

3. Check your smoke alarm<\/h3>\n

\"electricalMake sure you test your smoke alarms before you go on holiday so you can be safe in the knowledge that your neighbours can hear the alarm and call for help if needs be. Make sure you let them know that you won’t be at home.<\/p>\n

4. Get timer switches<\/h3>\n

Timer switches are ideal to help you save electricity all year round, as well as when you’re on holiday. You can place your lights on a timer so you can have different lights on at different times for security.<\/p>\n

5. Have your electrics checked<\/h3>\n

One of the top electrical safety tips is to have an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR)<\/a> done every year to check that your electrics are working properly. The report tells you about the condition of your home’s electrics and will highlight any defects or faults. If you’re concerned about any appliances, you can ask an electrician to carry out PAT testing<\/a> too.<\/p>\n
