1. Plan your colours<\/h3>\n

This is one of the most important painting and decorating tips you should follow. You’ll need to have an idea of your colour scheme before you head out to buy your paint. Make sure you plan the whole room if you’re going for a total refurb to ensure that all your furniture and furnishings match.<\/p>\n

2. Test your preferred colours<\/h3>\n

Work out a couple of colours you want, then purchase some tester pots to choose which colour you like the most. Rather than painting the walls like many people do, paint a big piece of card.<\/p>\n

Then lay out your flooring, fabric and other colours you have together so you can see how they work together. A benefit of painting on card rather than the walls is that you can take it out with you when you’re buying other home furnishings.<\/p>\n

Put your painted pieces of card on the wall and leave them there for several days. You’ll soon discover which ones you like and dislike.<\/p>\n

3. Write a plan<\/h3>\n

Regardless of whether you’re working with a professional painter or doing it yourself, you should write a plan. List every part of the room and note down the colour and finish for everything.<\/p>\n

4. Prep your surfaces<\/h3>\n

If you’re painting over dark colours, you’ll need to apply a primer to the walls to stop the old colour showing through. You might need to do some sanding or perhaps strip wallpaper. If you’ve got big bumps in your walls, it’s a good idea to replaster or skim them so you end up with the best outcome.<\/p>\n

5. Do not be afraid to use one colour<\/h3>\n

Many people worry about only using one colour for their walls, ceiling and woodwork. However, in a small room it can make it feel more spacious and the ceiling seem higher.<\/p>\n

Using a dark colour with white furnishings, perhaps in a bathroom, can work particularly well.<\/p>\n

6. Don’t neglect your ceiling<\/h3>\n

Sometimes called the ‘5th wall’, your ceiling is as important as your walls. As mentioned in number 5, painting the ceiling the same colour as your walls creates the illusion of height. However, if you wish to develop a contrast to highlight a ceiling feature, choose an opposite colour.<\/p>\n

If you fancy a traditional white ceiling, choose an off-white shade to give it a modern twist. This will also create a softer effect that is less harsh on the eyes.<\/p>\n

7. Highlight<\/h3>\n

Highlight a feature, like a particular furnishing. For example, if you have white furniture, paint your walls a bright and vibrant colour to make it stand out.<\/p>\n

8. Choose whether you want a feature wall<\/h3>\n

If you want a feature wall, don’t just paint one wall a bright colour. This will just make it look like you’ve left your painting job unfinished. Instead, draw attention to it by giving it a purpose. Hang artwork on it, for example, or put contrasting furniture along the wall.<\/p>\n

9. Don’t try to do too much<\/h3>\n

You should always work with what you have. Don’t attempt to copy a look you saw in a huge room in your small dining room. There is lots of inspiration out there for all types of room and any professional painter will be able to help you.<\/p>\n

10. Work with light<\/h3>\n
