If you’ve just had new plaster put onto your walls, you’re probably itching to decorate and get your room looking fabulous. But you don’t want to rush it – if you do, you could end up with very disappointing results.<\/p>\n

New plaster is very absorbent, so if you paint onto it too quickly all the liquid could be sucked into the plaster and leave your lovely new paint peeling. <\/p>\n

We’re going to tell you how to paint on new plaster and get it looking its best, with advice from real plasterers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Leave the plaster to dry first<\/h2>\n

Ideally, you should leave plaster to dry for a week or two before you paint over it. <\/p>\n

Ask your plasterer or refer to the container to see exactly how long you should leave it. <\/p>\n

Apply a mist coat<\/h2>\n

A mist coat is a watered down emulsion that is absorbed by the plaster. Adding a normal coat of paint to fresh plaster is too thick and will dry before it has time to adhere to the plaster. <\/p>\n

You can use any light coloured emulsion watered down to about 80% paint and 20% water<\/strong> as the mist coat. Apply it with a large brush which will reduce splatter, but if you’re in a hurry you can use a roller. If you’re really in a hurry, you can spray it on – but you’ll have to buy the machine which will put your costs up.

Do any filling<\/h2>\n

After you’ve applied the mist coat to the new plaster, it should be easy to see whether there are any imperfections that require filling. This is why it’s recommended to use a light colour as the mist coat, as it should show up any problems. So if you’ve got lots of tins of magnolia lying around, it might be time to put them to use!<\/p>\n

Paint over the mist coat<\/h2>\n

Now your mist coat is dry and you’ve done any required filling, you can get to painting your room in your chosen colour. <\/p>\n

You’ll need at least 2 coats, but once you’ve done that your room should look perfect. Now you can furnish it with matching furniture and accessories!<\/p>\n
