Most of us take our roofs for granted. It’s not until something goes wrong that we remember just how great it is to have a roof over our heads. And flashing is one of the things that can get damaged and cause water to leak into our homes.<\/p>\n

Flashing is the seal on your roof that prevents water from coming into your home around skylights, chimneys, dormers and vents. It prevents moisture damage when water is most prone to penetrate a roof’s surface.<\/p>\n

Where is flashing installed?<\/h3>\n

A roofer should fit this protective seal around all areas where there is weakness and requires extra protection. This includes edges, valleys, joints and any gaps on the roof that could cause water damage.<\/p>\n

How is it installed?<\/h3>\n

There are different types of flashing and they are installed around different parts of the roof. There is something called step flashing for chimneys, which is fitted with galvanised roofing nails. Another material is then wrapped around and is secured with steel masonry fasteners.<\/p>\n

To fit flashing around vent pipes, valleys and drip edges, the material needs to be cut to different sizes and shapes.<\/p>\n

How bad flashing can damage your roof<\/h3>\n

When you have a new roof installed, make sure the roofer installs flashing correctly. If they do a bad job, you could end up with premature deterioration at roof joints which will cause you lots of problems and cost a lot of money.<\/p>\n
