1. Find out which survey you need<\/h2>\n

The survey you need will depend on the kind of home you’re buying. You’ll also need to think about the information you need as this will determine the type of survey you require. Is it a Homebuyer’s Report or a Full Building Survey?<\/p>\n

The age of the property, the design and problems you may have noticed at the viewing are also factors that you should take into account when deciding what survey you need.<\/p>\n

2. Get a range of quotes<\/h2>\n

Don’t just go with the first surveyor you come across. Get at least three quotes and compare their prices.<\/p>\n

Beware of very cheap quotes, as you may not get the service you expect. Typically, a Building Survey on a property valued between \u00a3101-\u00a3200k should cost \u00a3560 whereas a Homebuyer’s Report should cost around \u00a3350. Remember, this will vary, so it’s imperative you get quotes.<\/p>\n

3. Check what local knowledge the surveyor has<\/h2>\n

A surveyor that has good knowledge of the local area and the properties in it will be able to carry out a well-informed survey.<\/p>\n

If you’re buying a listed building or unusual property, it’s worth finding a surveyor that specialises in these properties. When you’re getting quotes, tell them about the property you’re thinking about buying and ask what experience they have.<\/p>\n

4. Find out exactly what you’ll get<\/h2>\n
