A popular biomass fuel is logs. Using them to heat your home is a great way to reduce your carbon emissions. And if you use logs to fuel a biomass boiler you could also be eligible for funding through the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive scheme.
To help you decide whether you want a log-fuelled biomass boiler in your home, we’ve made a list of the advantages and disadvantages of logs.
Advantages
Readily available
An advantage to logs is that they’re readily available. You can get them all around the country and transporting them is an easy job. So if you choose to use logs, you’re not likely to run out of them anytime soon.
Possible to generate your own supply
Another benefit to logs is that it’s possible to generate your own supply. If you’re lucky enough to have wood on your land then it’s easy enough to cut it down to the right size for your boiler. Just remember to put your logs into storage to dry out before you use them.
Disadvantages
Need lots of storage space
A downside to logs is that they need lots of storage space. If stacked compactly then they shouldn’t need any more storage space than wood chips do. However, because logs have high moisture content they need to be spaced out to let them dry out. Sp the ideal log storage space is large and well-ventilated.
Incompatible with automatic feeding systems
Another disadvantage to logs is that they aren’t usually compatible with automatic feeding systems. This is because logs tend to be uneven shapes and sizes. Having a boiler that you have to feed manually is fine if you’re willing to put the effort in, but for many people it’s an unwelcome hassle.
Low energy density
Logs have relatively low energy density compared to wood pellets and chips. This means that they produce fewer kWh per kg than other biomass fuels. So if you’re after the most energy-efficient fuel possible, logs probably aren’t the best choice for you.
If you decide that you want a log-fuelled biomass boiler, it’s a good idea to get some professional advice. A reliable contractor will be able to give you advice on the best type of log-fuelled biomass boiler for you and your home.
