The Boiler Scrappage Scheme was a very popular Government programme to fund the installation of new energy efficient boilers in replacement of old, inefficient systems. The scheme intended to encourage homeowners by offering a voucher to help cover the installation costs.
Unfortunately the scheme has now expired in England and Wales, but Scotland still benefits from a Green Homes Cashback Scheme. All of the vouchers were used up. The Boiler Scrappage Scheme was never available in Northern Ireland.
If you still want to replace your inefficient boiler there are other options available too. Subject to eligibility criteria you could receive a free boiler with the ECO boiler scheme (see the bottom of this page).
There is also the Government Green Deal on offer, which provides a loan to help with the cost of installation. These loans are then repaid with the money you’ll save on energy bills, because of the improved efficiency.
England and Wales
In England and Wales the Boiler Scrappage Scheme was deemed as very successful. More homeowners than expected jumped at the chance to receive money off the cost of a new boiler. However, because of limited funds made available, all of the vouchers have been taken up.
The scheme was initially introduced to kick start the boiler industry and improve home efficiency. In total there were 133,976 vouchers allocated with 118,249 new boilers installed. Once the voucher was acquired it had to be used within 12 weeks or deemed invalid. Homeowners were unable to apply again if this happened to them.
There have been rumours that the Government is keen to introduce a similar scheme again in the future because of the high success rates and some companies will still offer discounts for the installation. Remember though that these are in no way linked to the Government Boiler Scrappage Scheme, so always compare quotes between a number of companies to get the best deals.
Scotland
Extra funds were provided for Scottish homes, ensuring the scrappage scheme lasted longer. But like the scheme in England and Wales, it too has now expired. However, there is still the Green Home Cashback Scheme available.
The Scottish Government is offering homeowners, private and social tenants and private sector landlords up to £1,200 towards energy efficiency measures that are recommended in the Green Deal assessment. This is a great way to gain support for the improvement of energy efficiency in your home.
The grants available include:
- Up to £500 for insulation measures
- Up to £400 for a new boiler
- Up to £300 for measures such as glazing, LED lighting or heating controls.
