Double glazing is a popular investment for many homeowners, but as with anything, you’ll want to factor in cost to any decision you make. After all, it’s not exactly cheap to have all of your windows replaced with double glazing.
One thing to be aware of though, is that with double glazing you should always opt for quality over price. There will be many companies trying to get your signature by offering a ‘too good to be true’ price.
Don’t rush into anything like this. What’s crucial is to find out exactly what’s offered as double glazing will change from company to company based on the glass and frames.
Even if two deals appear to be the same, one may have a lot more quality than the other.
Barter down the price
Unfortunately, most double glazing companies will first of all offer you a high-end price. If you instantly sign-up you’ll likely be paying over the odds. What’s important to remember though is the company will want your business. This is when bartering comes into play.
To put yourself in a good position, speak with up to four double glazing companies and get a price from each. Now you hold the cards, with four separate quotes.
You can simply going between the companies and tell them their offer has been bettered by a rival. The chances are you’ll be able to get a lot of the original price knocked off in this manner.
The window frames
If you’re looking to bring down the overall cost of your double glazing, then an area to look at is the frames. There are three main frames to choose from; uPVC, aluminium and hardwood.
Each has its own benefits and drawbacks, but if price is a real concern, opt for uPVC frames. They’re by far the cheapest and offer a hardwearing, weather resistant solution for your window frames.
Whilst aluminium frames may be stronger and hardwood frames aesthetically pleasing, they will cost a fair bit more, without offering as much value for money.
