The government’s long-term targets of reducing carbon emissions in the UK has led to many energy efficiency products coming to the forefront of home improvement. The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) want to generate 80% of the country’s energy through renewables by 2050, while also helping homeowners to reduce their energy bills through efficient insulation.
Loft lagging, wall cavity insulation, efficient boilers, and double glazing are just some of the ways you can improve the efficiency in your property. Installing one of all of these will help you cut gas and electricity bills as less heat will be lost.
And something that has come to the forefront of energy efficiency recently is glass known as Planitherm. This glass can be used in double glazing and triple glazing units. Just using Planitherm in your home can save you 28% on your energy bills and is the leading energy efficiency measure. With 25% of heat lost through inefficient windows, reducing heat loss is a priority.
Craig Dodsworth, spokesman from a leading glazing company said: “Windows need to work harder as they play a valuable role in reducing heat loss and therefore slashing our energy consumption. There are currently 26.3 million homes in the UK, and we know that approximately 75% of these either don’t have full double glazing, or have double glazing that was installed prior to 2002, so there are substantial savings to be made by replacing the windows in these properties with A-rated double glazed windows.
“A-ratings can easily be achieved using Planitherm glass, as it draws heat and light in from outside and helps to reduce heat loss by reflecting much of the radiated heat back into the room, rather than letting it escape out through the windows.”
Planitherm glass makes even more sense if you’re replacing inefficient windows to begin with, as it commands a similar price to normal glass. On the average dual fuel bills of £1,345 a year you’ll save as much as £376. This saves a lot of money to put towards a holiday, other home improvements or even next year’s Christmas presents.
