Finding a professional floor fitter may seem like a daunting task because you don’t know where to start off. But it’s a process you should take carefully because you don’t want to be on the end of a botched job.
When on the hunt for a reputable floor fitter there are a number of avenues to go down:
- Speak to your friends or family who have recently had floor laid in their home. This is a great way of getting a recommendation and you can see the contractor’s handiwork first-hand before deciding to use their services
- Search the Yellow Pages for floor fitters in your area. You should choose a company specialising in floor fitting if you want a great job finished
- Compare up to four quotes from reputable floor fitters in your area. We can match your requirements with experts in your area who have proven quality and will perform a great job.
Getting a price estimate
A floor fitter will normally visit your home to arrange a quote for the work you want completing. This will take into account the materials you wish to purchase, the size of the room and how long it’ll take.
Estimates for floor fitting usually take into account a good subfloor condition, but if this isn’t the case you can see costs rise if the flooring is uneven or boards are missing.
Preparing for the floor fitter
Once you have received quotes for the floor fitting and agreed a price with the professional, there’s only one stage left: To fit the flooring.
There are a few things you can do here to quicken the process and make life easier for your contractor.

First of all make sure the old flooring has been taken up and disposed of. This can be carpet, tiles or old wooden flooring. Also remove furniture from the room and check that your floorboards are fixed in place so there’s no squeaking when the floor has been laid.
Also make sure your floor is clean and dry. The last thing you want is for the new flooring to be laid over damp and problems to arise in the future.
Remember, that once the flooring has been laid it becomes very difficult to access pipes and wires underneath, so make sure these are all dealt with before the fitting.
Also, if you want the best possible finish for your room, consider removing the skirting boards and reapplying once the floor has been installed.
