Green Homes Grant – everything you need to know

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced a £2bn Green Homes Grant in England for energy-saving home improvements including insulation and double glazing.

Under the scheme, the government will pay at least two-thirds of the cost of home improvements that save energy.

For example, a homeowner of a semi-detached or end-of-terrace house could install insulation for about £3,000 – the homeowner would pay 1/3 while the government would contribute 2/3 of the total cost.

How Does the Green Homes Grant work?

The full details of the governments scheme are being confirmed, but a wide range of energy-saving home improvements will be included within the scheme. Business Secretary Alok Sharma confirmed that insulation and energy efficient windows and doors, double and triple glazing will be included in the new scheme.

How will the scheme work in practice? Homeowners will be expected to use an accredited installer and check their project is eligible for a voucher before the work is undertaken.

  1. Check the list of eligible energy-saving home improvements
  2. Source an accredited local tradesman
  3. Receive quotes for the project – we recommend getting multiple quotes as the homeowner you will pay 1/3 of the cost so getting a lower price means you will pay less
  4. The work is approved to be undertaken
  5. Voucher is issued for the amount.

Ultimately means is lower bills for households, hundreds of pounds off energy bills every year, it’s supporting jobs and is very good news for the environment.

Installers will still need to to be approved by the governments scheme.

Reaction to the Green Homes Grant scheme has been positive with the glazing industry relieved that energy efficient doors and windows will be included

Naturally the GGF welcomes any positive Government initiative that will boost our industry, the economy and help the environment. We will though have to wait and see the full detail of the scheme and then communicate the benefits to our Members and homeowners.
