There are many factors which make stone such an expensive option, so it pays to know what they are. It’s a quarried material, which takes a lot of work to first of all quarry, then cut, shape and polish.
When you’re looking at premium stone as well, this is quarried all over the world so you’ll pay transportation prices. As a bulkier and heavier product it also requires more labour during the installation.
How can you reduce the cost?
If you still want a stone worktop but don’t want to pay premium prices there are a few things you can do.
- Buy lower quality stone
There are different grades and tiers for pricing stone, so pure granite will contain very few other materials. If you work your way down the gradings then you’ll come to lower tier stone which is cheaper. Whilst it may need sealing and contains a few other stones and minerals, you’ll save quite a bit of money.
- Choose a thinner slab
For the best granite countertops you’re looking at a thickness of three centimetres. So if you want to save some money on these higher end products, what do you do? Simply shave some of the width off and have a thinner slab. Two centimetres for example, will save you quite a bit and won’t compromise your bathroom appeal. Choose your own thickness and control your spending.
