Biomass boilers offer a solution to avoid paying expensive National Grid energy rates, and with a host of cash incentives and saving potential, biomass is well worth the investment.
Biomass boilers burn wood pellets to power a home’s central heating, removing the need to pay out for pricey gas, electricity or oil. The system is capable of providing both your space and hot water heating too, so savings will be significant.
Your savings and earnings with a biomass boiler
There are a range of Government incentives available for those considering biomass as a suitable heating option.
First off there is the Renewable Heat Premium Payment (RHPP) grant, helping you with the investment cost of a biomass boiler. The grant offers £2,000 for those purchasing a new system.
Then there is the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), a scheme aimed at incentivising renewables by paying out for each unit of environmentally friendly heat generated. The RHI will be paid for seven years at a rate of 12.2p/kWh for biomass boilers. And experts predict this will see homeowners earning over £400 every year.
And on top both of these, there are the savings you’ll make by replacing your heating fuel. Homes currently using LPG or electric heating can make the greatest savings, but those on the gas grid can see a decent level of savings too.

- Electricity: £630 a year
- Oil: £270 a year
- LPG: 790 a year
- Coal: 270 a year
- Gas: 90 a year
For biomass boilers there is a further incentive, if you take out a metering and monitoring package. With this option you can earn an extra £200 annually, on top of your other savings and earnings.
How much will a biomass boiler cost?
A pellet stove will cost you around £4,300, including the installation charges. A log stove is around half of this, which would include the new flue or chimney lining.
For a full on automatically fed pellet biomass boiler will cost more, but this would be able to supply your home’s full heating needs and costs include the installation, flue, fuel store and VAT at 5%. You’ll pay a slightly cheaper price for manually fed systems.
Don’t be put off an investment though, because when you consider the savings achievable it’s actually a fantastic deal.
Of course, with the RHPP grant of £2,000, plus the hundreds of pounds saved and earned every year, not only can you quickly recoup your money, but you’ll make an excellent return on investment too.
