Cardiff paying the highest energy bills in the UK

Homeowners in Cardiff are paying the highest energy bills of anywhere in Britain, and the average home is spending £1,108 every year for gas and electricity. The report backs government claims that Cardiff is the most expensive energy city in the UK.

The findings which were published by uSwitch show Liverpool homes as the second most expensive area, with bills averaging around £1,100 each year.

And on the other end of the scale, Brighton, Leeds and Edinburgh were the cheapest cities for gas and electricity.

But no matter how much you’re paying on energy bills, you can reduce the cost with energy saving measures such as double glazing or a new energy efficient boiler.

And you can generate free energy too, with renewable technologies. Products such as solar panels, heat pumps and wind turbines convert natural sources such as the sun’s rays, into energy.

It’s not just on your bills that you’ll make a saving too, but your carbon dioxide emissions will also be reduced. This is because fossil fuels aren’t being burnt to provide you with power, which is great for the environment.

The residential sector is using 50% more energy than the UK industry and it’s this area the government is trying to focus its efforts on to reduce carbon emissions.

The Energy Act has been announced which will give homes the chance to insulate their homes ahead of the winter and the Green Deal will launch in 2012.

But the renewable sector hasn’t been overlooked and the Feed-in tariff scheme is still active, which pays homes for every unit of electricity generated. And although the Renewable Heat Incentive was delayed last month, the government say it’s still in their plans.

It’s a perfect time to start thinking about generating your own energy, which will help preserve the environment and reduce your bills.
