Greenhouse gas emissions on the decline

Did you know that despite expert warnings on the levels of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, there has actually been a reduction since 1990?

In fact, the latest figures from the European Environment Agency (EEA) show that emissions have decreased 18.4%.

A lot of this has been attributed to milder winters whereby homeowners aren’t cranking up the heating as much as they once did, but undeniably the efforts of the UK, France and Germany have had a part to play as well.

In Britain particularly, the Government’s environmental agenda has been on helping homeowners produce their own energy and making homes more efficient.

This is obvious in respect to the scrappage boiler scheme, incentives for installing solar panels and other financial rewards.

According to the reports, an increase in emissions has been noted in countries such as Spain, Romania and Bulgaria.

Jacqueline McGlade, EEA Executive Director, said: “The greenhouse gas emissions cut in 2011 is good news, however, it was largely due to a warmer winter. Nonetheless, the EU is making clear progress towards its emission targets.”

She continued: “There was an increase in consumption of more carbon-intensive fuels such as coal, while hydroelectricity production and gas consumption decreased. If Europe is to achieve the transition towards a low-carbon society, it will need sustained investment in technology and innovation.”

In total there has been a 5% decrease in fossil fuel consumption in Europe, with solar and wind power factoring heavily in the change.

But more can be done to cut emissions. And if you’re not an eco-warrior it doesn’t mean you can’t do your bit. Even if environmental issues pass you by, making changes to your home will see you save a small fortune too.

Solar panels for example are a great way to cut emissions and with them installed on your roof you’ll save and earn over £600 every year. Even replacing your old boiler can see you save £310 annually on your expensive heating bills.

The good news is, there’s no need to break the bank either when it comes to making home amendments. Improvements such as loft lagging and wall cavity insulation can provide substantial savings and don’t cost the Earth to implement.

Essentially it’s all about doing your own little bit for the environment, no matter how big or small. When there’s the incentive of saving hundreds of pounds every year, it’s a no brainer.
