When it comes to the home, experts will tell you that it’s important to try and make your rooms as light and airy as possible.
By doing this you can even give the impression that they’re larger than they really are. And this is always a great advantage.
Gloomy rooms are the last thing you want, but sometimes you can think it’s unavoidable if there are no windows.
The good news is though you won’t need to spend thousands of pounds redesigning the home.
In fact, with some great tips you can introduce more light to your home and create a fantastic atmosphere.
Borrowing light
If you have a room in your home without any access to light, then how about borrowing it from elsewhere? It’s easy enough to do this too, and you can simply replace a solid wooden door with glass panels to continue the passage of light. Of course, this isn’t always possible such as with bathrooms and bedrooms for obvious reasons.
However, this is certainly a great idea for hallways, landings and living rooms. You could also consider integrating glass into your front and back doors.

If you do have an overly dark bathroom or bedroom, then look at the space between the top of the door and the ceiling. You could fit a panel of glass here to bring in the light you need. And this practice can be used all over your home.
Ceilings and floors
You don’t always need to have light passing from room to room on the same floor level. In fact, there are also possibilities to have light passing from the floor to the room below. This will require a little more investment though but is perfect for lighting a dark corridor underneath.
The windows
The exact design of your windows can have a big say in the amount of natural light flooding into your home.
Including bars in your design may bring character, but more glass will introduce extra light into the home. If you have a chunky frame then consider a slimmer design to maximise the light.

Of course, don’t forget that there are some stringent rules and regulations surrounding windows and doors, especially if you live in a conservation area. Therefore, it’s also recommended to speak with the local council before commencing with any work.
If you’re thinking about adding a new window to your property then it’s a great idea, but ensure you’ve given it proper consideration. How will it change the outside of your home? The last thing you need is to ruin your home’s exterior appeal. With an extra window you’ll also lose wall space, so think about how this will affect your furniture positioning.
The loft

If you have plans to convert your loft then make sure you’re putting roof windows into the design. Before the conversion the loft will be a dark and gloomy area with no natural light. This isn’t how you want the new room to be. There are a range of window designs available to complement any loft and property too.
Light tunnelling
Have you ever thought about tunnelling light to a dark room in the home? It’s a brilliant opportunity to bring in natural light and a sun pipe is installed, connected between the roof and the room. You’ll only see a small square from the outside, but a tube allows the light to come in and means you won’t need to turn on the electric light during the day.
Extensions

With more people looking to stay in their property rather than relocate it’s little wonder that extensions have become so popular. But no matter if you want a conservatory or a brick conversion, don’t forget about the light. With a conservatory, think about a glass roof and large panes.
