IKEA has become one of the most popular home furnishing stores in the UK, despite being a Scandinavian company. You’ll probably be more accustomed to its flat-pack and cheaper furniture, but bizarrely, the business has started to sell solar panels too.
There are 18 IKEA stores countrywide so if you wanted to get your hands on some cheap solar panels, then it’d be pretty easy to do so. But should you trust them?
Well let’s start with the good news. You won’t be supplied with an Allen key and expected to be scaling the roof yourself with a large solar panel. Instead, solar panels from IKEA are installed by MCS accredited companies and as such, are eligible to receive the lucrative feed-in tariff scheme.
It’s not the first time a household name has delved into the solar industry either, as Marks & Spencers, Tesco and Sainsbury’s have all invested in renewable technology.
IKEA aren’t working alone though. Instead they’re in partnership with Chinese brand known as Hanergy, which is responsible for a large portion of UK solar installation every year.
So how much do IKEA solar panels cost?
According to IKEA, a standard 3.36kW system will cost £5,700, as long as you’re a member of the IKEA loyalty scheme. this isn’t bad in relation to the competition either, with average prices start around £4,500 and stretching to just over £7,000.
Of course, when it comes to solar panels, price isn’t everything. You also want to be sure of the quality of installer and product. Essentially you do get what you pay for and spending a little more would see you with more efficient panels. That’s why it’s always crucial to compare prices.
Can IKEA quote without seeing my home?
With Google Earth it makes it easier for companies to quote you for solar panels without necessarily visiting.
However, solar panels shouldn’t be sold as a one size fits all. Instead you want a system that’s specific to your home and needs.
Essentially, for raising awareness in the solar market and getting people back on board with renewables, IKEA’s entry into solar isn’t a bad thing. Back in 2011 after the Government made cuts to the feed-in tariff scheme, many were turned off.
But the fact is, solar is still a lucrative investment worth thousands of pounds for every homeowner. Your best bet is to compare prices and products from up to four solar installers in your area, before finding one you’re completely happy with.
