Choosing an electrician

Your home electrics can be extremely dangerous, so you’ll want a trustworthy electrician registered with Part P, who you know will offer a reasonable price for the work. But how can you guarantee getting this?

Take a look through our guide to choosing an electrician and get peace of mind with your decision.

First off, you need to compare quotes for the work you want completed. Don’t rush into a decision and take the first offer that comes your way because this could end with you spending much more than necessary.

Receive at least three quotes for the electrical work you want completed. Be clear what you want and always ask to have the quote written down. Of course, if the work is minor this won’t always be required.

Your next step is to verify the electrician’s reputability. Ask for proof of their Part P registration and if it’s a large job such as a house rewiring, don’t be afraid to request references from past customers. A good electrician will not hesitate to provide you with these.

Another good pointer is to ask for a copy of their Public Liability Insurance and find out if they have a complaints resolution process. They may also offer an insurance-backed warrantee.

If you follow the above tips you will now have chosen a reputable electrician who should perform a great service.

What next?

Before they start:

  • Make sure to agree a set timetable for the work, so you know when to expect completion. If it’s a larger job then ask for updates on the progress and ensure you’re informed if work will be delayed
  • Agree a set fee for the work. Depending on the electrician, they may require material costs upfront and payments at regular intervals
  • Ensure to pay by cheque rather than cash, which can be easy to lose track of. Make sure to get receipts or a statement.

Throughout the work:

  • Avoid making any changes to the work you require as this will end up with you paying out more and could cause delays. If changes do need to be made however, make sure they’re confirmed in writing
  • Speak to the electrician if you have any questions. If it’s a national company then ensure to contact the person in charge and make it clear why you’re unhappy or concerned. This will give the electrician a chance to remedy any problems

After the work has been completed:

  • No matter how big or small the job make sure to get a certificate to confirm the work meets the UK Safety Standard, BS 7671
  • If the work has been completed for the purposes of Building Regulations then ask for the certificate to confirm the work conforms to regulations
  • Once you have the appropriate certification then keep it in a safe place because you may be asked to show it at a later date to prove the work was completed to a safe standard. This may be even more important when you want to sell your home.
