Which energy company are you signed up with for your gas and electricity? The chances are it’s one of the so called ‘big six’ suppliers, from E.ON, Npower, British Gas, EDF, Scottish Power and SSE.
If it’s not, then you’re probably paying less for your energy than most homeowners around the country. Did you know that the smaller energy companies that you may not have heard of use green energy technology to produce power? This would include solar panels and wind turbines.
And stranger still, these companies offer cheaper rates than the ‘big six’.
Ecotricity’s Dale Vince claims his company can save you £100 a year on your energy bill because the consumer’s money is invested in renewable energy, rather than spent on fossil fuels.
Vince has also hit out at the ‘cartel’ like behaviour of the major companies. This is in regards to the fact they all raise prices together, giving customers little chance of making a saving.
He says: “I kept my prices below the Big Six by building wind turbines and avoiding fossil fuel rises. We had already taken the step of slightly lowering electricity bills for our customers from October 1, now we are going further and freezing those prices until the New Year.
“People often assume that green electricity is more expensive. But most households in Britain are actually on a standard tariff, so millions of households could get 100% green electricity for less than the price they pay for brown electricity from the Big Six.”
“Around 40% of our electricity supply is self-generated by our own fleet of wind and sun parks, and we have planning permission to more than double that supply in the near future, this degree of energy independence now means we can be price independently.
“Our work is aimed at bringing about an energy independent Britain, and as a green energy company we want to demonstrate how this can be achieved – the more of our own energy we produce through our own renewable sources, the greater we’ll be able to shield our customers from price hikes that come with an over-reliance on fossil fuels. It’s all part of our vision for a Green Britain.”
