Solar panels: Busting the myths

Solar panels have become a revelation in the 21st Century. Now they’re on thousands of properties in the UK and homeowners are making the most of their financial benefits, including saving and earning over £600 annually.

With lucrative Government schemes, solar panels have turned into a serious money maker for your home.

But despite the rising popularity over the last few years, it seems there are still some misconceptions regarding solar panels. Unfortunately, some of these are putting you off an investment.

So let’s break the myths and give you a better understanding of solar at the same time.

Myth 1: Solar is expensive

It’s fair to say that solar panels aren’t the cheapest investment you could make, but still, there are much more expensive home improvements on the market. What’s important to remember though is that as energy prices become more and more pricey, solar panels prove a better solution for your home.

Large solar systems of around 4kW will cost you up to £6,000, but given the savings and earnings possible, you can see a return of investment in just seven years.

Myth 2: Solar panels are an eyesore

Of course, this is all going to come down to personal preference, but it doesn’t seem fair to label solar panels as an eyesore. There are many different variants of solar panels available, ensuring you can find something to suit your property.

Myth 3: Solar doesn’t work in the winter

This is the myth that puts many people off a solar investment. That’s because it’s believed that solar won’t work in cold climates, which includes the winter months. Also, as the UK isn’t the warmest of countries, there’s a question mark over whether solar is appropriate.

However, solar doesn’t rely on the sun to produce environmentally friendly electricity. Instead, as long as there’s daylight, the system can generate energy. So whilst they may not work at night, throughout the day they’ll supply you with free energy.

Myth 4: Solar panels need a lot of maintenance

This couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, solar panels don’t need continual maintenance and will work all year round perfectly well. All you’ll need to do is ensure debris and dirt is kept off of the panels, whilst preventing trees casting a shadow over the system.

Myth 5: Solar doesn’t have a long life expectancy

Solar panels will probably last longer than you need them for and will easily payback your initial investment over their lifetime. The Government’s feed-in tariff is guaranteed for 20 years and experts suggest they’ll exceed a 25-year lifetime too.
