Energy secretary Chris Huhne has revealed his intentions to cut carbon emissions in half by 2027.
Huhne is expected to make an announcement on the proposed plans to the House of Commons and if successful, the UK will be the first country in the world to have a greenhouse gas emissions target beyond 2020.
With pressure from both Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth, David Cameron has publically backed the campaign, despite Lib Dem colleague Vince Cable’s fears of the target burdening the economy.
Labour leader Ed Miliband also pounced on the coalition’s uncertainty by writing to the Prime Minister and reminding him of the promise to lead the “greenest government ever.” He said that failing to agree to the targets would send a “terrible signal” to business and the rest of the world.
To cover the carbon emissions target, it is expected the average household fuel bill will go up by £1 a week until 2020.
There are many ways that you can help reduce carbon emissions in your home, such as installing double glazing or fitting solar panels for electricity and hot water.
