Acton is a district in the London Borough of Ealing in west London. It is 6.1 miles west of Charing Cross. In the 2011 census, Acton had a population of 62,480 - a 10 year increase of 8,791 individuals.
Acton means 'oak farm' or ''farm by oak trees', and originates from old English. It was initially an ancient village, and as London expanded it was absorbed into the city. Since 1965, Acton has been part of the east of Ealing, but some parts of East Acton are within the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham and a small part of South Acton is within the London Borough of Hounslow. Acton is one of the places with the most stations bearing their name anywhere in the country, with seven stations including its name.
Central Acton is referred to as the hub of commerce and retail on the former main road between London and Oxford, referred to as the Uxbridge Road. The main road consists of a great deal of inns, which date back to the late Tudor period as stopping places for travellers. Today, the A40 dual carriageway is the principal route from London to Oxford, and it bypasses central Acton. It still passes via East Acton and North Acton.
Acton is home to the biggest housing estate in West London, named the South Acton estate, with approximately 2,000 houses and 5,800 residents. The area is at the moment in phase two of a significant 15-year phased regeneration which consists of almost complete demolition of the current residential units and the construction of new and much more residences. This is most likely to raise its population further.

For some types of asbestos, you are not legally required to use a licensed contractor. However, it’s recommended that you always use one. These contractors will have all the relevant training and knowledge to make sure asbestos is removed safely. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is the licensing body.
If you find out there’s asbestos in your property, it’s not always necessary to remove it. Asbestos is relatively low-risk if it’s contained in a material. This means that, if the material it’s in is in good condition, it shouldn’t be a problem.
However, if a material containing asbestos is damaged, or you want to remove, sand or drill into it, it’s best to have it removed by a licensed professional.
Is Asbestos Dangerous?
The short and simple answer to this question is yes, asbestos is absolutely dangerous. Exposure to asbestos fibres and dust can lead to cancer, lung disease and lots more. It’s known to be so dangerous that no level of exposure to asbestos is considered safe. It has been banned in the UK since 1999 but exposure is till rampant due to the exceptions to the ban and there’s a good chance that you’ll find it in several older buildings and homes. And despite the ban in most countries, asbestos related health issues are still on the rise across the globe. People that are mostly exposed to this risk are those who’re exposed on the job as well as those who simply like to take on projects around the house containing asbestos insulation by themselves.
Furthermore, there’s a need to observe safety precautions when working with asbestos. If not, you’ll be exposing both you and your family to long term health risks. Below are some of the things you need to know about the dangers of asbestos.
✓ Exposure to asbestos fibres has no safe level. So it’s best to avoid exposure at all costs.
✓ Breathing in asbestos dust can lead to lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma.
✓ If disturbed, asbestos can release dangerous particles of dust containing asbestos fibres.
✓ Mesothelioma is a type of cancer which mostly affects the lung’s lining. It has no cure.
✓ If you smoke, then the risk of inhaling asbestos is greatly increased.
✓ The number of fibres inhaled as well as the length of time that you’ve been exposed to it increases the risk of contracting asbestos related diseases.
✓ The symptoms of asbestos dust related diseases do not commonly come out until its about 20 to 30 years after the first exposure.
What Does Asbestos Cause?
The perfect example of a silent killer is asbestos. Wonder why? From the day of exposure, you might not see any symptoms of the asbestos containing material disease till years later and more often than not, these disease are not treatable. And as dangerous at it is, it’s most likely not something you’d think about on a daily basis unless you’ve been affected by this harmful material or probably someone you know has.
Found in rocks and soils, asbestos have been an important material for manufacturers across the globe for numerous reasons. Not only are they exceptional insulation materials in both electrical and buildings, but they’re also flexible and resistant to heat, chemicals as well as electricity. And due to this fact, they represent a very common material that’s used in automotive parts, construction materials as well as textiles.
Asbestos when disturbed and inhaled for a long period of time can significantly increase your risk for diseases such as lung cancer, mesothelioma as well as asbestosis. Smokers are more likely feel a greater impact as cigarette smoke irritates lung passages which makes it a lot more difficult for the lungs to remove asbestos fibres.
Mesothelioma. This is a form of cancer that affects the lining of the lungs as well as the lining surrounding the lower digestive tract. By the time diagnosed, it’s almost always fatal.
Lung Cancer. This asbestos related lung cancer is almost the same with that caused by smoking and other causes.
Abestosis. This is a serious scarring condition of the lung which usually occurs after exposure to asbestos after a lengthy period. It can lead to shortness of breath, and in some cases, can be fatal.
