Asbestos removal is an important process in UK properties. For building purposes asbestos once was quite popular in the United Kingdom primarily for the insulating properties. But with related health risks the Government imposed a ban on its use in 2006.

Despite this you can still find a huge number of homes with asbestos use within the ceilings and walls. And the results of lengthy exposure can be quite harmful to your health, with two forms of lung cancer connected with asbestos.

If you want to have asbestos removed from your own home, a Health and Safety Executive will perform an assessment to find out if it is present. If this is the situation it has to be essential to have removed, because if you become diagnosed with an asbestos connected condition it will often be too late.

For your very own safety, make sure to make use of our service to contrast prices from experts locally. We'll match your requirements with as many as four companies to help you receive a totally free quotation for the work and take the matter from there.

Scalpay is an island in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Scalpay is around 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) long as well as rises to an elevation of 104 metres (341 feet) at Beinn Scorabhaig. The location of Scalpay is 653 hectares (2.52 sq mi). The major settlement on the island is at the north, near the bridge, clustered around An Acairseid a Tuath (North Harbour). The island is peppered with little lochans. The largest of these is Loch an Duin (Loch of the Fort) which has a little island in it, with the remains of the ft still noticeable. Eilean Glas, a small peninsula on Scalpay's eastern shore, is home to the initial lighthouse to be constructed in the Outer Hebrides. Scalpay's nearest neighbour, Harris, is just 300 metres (980 feet) away across the tightens of Caolas Scalpaigh. In 1997, a bridge from Harris to Scalpay was built, changing a ferry solution. In 2001, the island had 322 people, whose major employment was fish farming and prawn fishing. By 2011 the population had actually declined by 9% to 291 whilst throughout the very same period Scottish island populations in its entirety grew by 4% to 103,702.

FAQs

Can I remove asbestos from my own house?

In some situations, it is possible to remove asbestos from your home without holding a licence. However, unless you’ve had training on working with asbestos, it’s not a good idea to do the work yourself. In these cases, you’ll need to make sure you wear complete protective clothing, including a face mask and overalls, and disturb the material as little as possible. You’ll also need to find out the best place to dispose of your asbestos here [https://www.gov.uk/asbestos-in-home], and get rid of your protective clothing in the same place.

However, in many cases you’ll need a licence to do an asbestos removal job, so will need to call in a professional. This is also almost always the safest way to remove your asbestos too, so is generally the best option to go for.

What is asbestos?

Asbestos refers to a group of minerals made up of tiny fibres. If you become exposed to these fibres and breathe them in, you’re at risk of contracting a dangerous lung-related disease.

Asbestos is strong and a good insulator, which means it was previously used to insulate and reinforce parts of buildings, like ceilings, roofs and guttering. Its use has been banned in the UK since 2000, but it is still present in lots of domestic and commercial buildings today.

Asbestos usually only poses a health risk if the material it’s contained in is damaged and its fibres are released into the air.

Should I use a licensed contractor for asbestos removal?

For some types of asbestos, you are not legally required to use a licensed contractor. However, it’s recommended that you always use one. These contractors will have all the relevant training and knowledge to make sure asbestos is removed safely. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is the licensing body.

Should asbestos be removed?

If you find out there’s asbestos in your property, it’s not always necessary to remove it. Asbestos is relatively low-risk if it’s contained in a material. This means that, if the material it’s in is in good condition, it shouldn’t be a problem.

However, if a material containing asbestos is damaged, or you want to remove, sand or drill into it, it’s best to have it removed by a licensed professional.
