Damp Proofing in Bradford-on-avon

Extensions including garage conversions will usually require additional damp proofing to be added during the conversion, as the existing garage typically has a single skin design for walls and floors, which was not manufactured to conform to building regulations for habitable rooms. This damp proofing should be put into walls and floors. Moreover, the roofing of the garage conversion will require water proofing. The damp proofing of the floor of the garage conversion will in most cases be performed by employing a damp proof membrane. This membrane can come in either solid or liquid form. The damp proof membrane will be placed down either on top of the existing concrete floor, underneath the new floor, or as part of both, depending on if the floor will be a solid or a floating floor. In some garages, the walls have been damp proofed, but this may need to be updated as part of the conversion in order to adhere to current building regulations. The walls should be damp proofed to be able to safeguard the brickwork from rotting slowly as moisture sets in. This can be carried out by either using damp proof membranes, waterproof rendering, or cavity insulation, depending on the type of walls that are already present in the garage. Damp proofing is an important part of the building regulations that the garage conversion should comply with, and so is it important to ensure that your garage conversion makes use of suitable damp proofing methods.

Bradford-on-avon

Bradford on Avon is a town and civil parish in west Wiltshire, England, with a population of about 9,402 at the 2011 Census. The town lies partially around the Avon Valley, and partially on the hill that marks the Vale's western edge, 8 miles southeast of Bath, in the hilly countryside among the Mendip Hills, Salisbury Plain as well as the Cotswold Hills. The local area around Bath provides the Jurassic limestone (Bath Stone) which is used as a building material for the town's historic buildings are built. The River Avon (Bristol Avon) flows through the town. The town neighbours Trowbridge towards the south east. The town consists of the suburban areas of Bearfield and Woolley; the parish includes the hamlets of Widbrook and Woolley Green. The town's canal, original buildings, shops, pubs and restaurants make it attractive to tourists. The history of the town can be traced back to the Roman period. It has a number of buildings dating from the seventeenth century, when the town grew because of the thriving English woollen textile industry. A unique attraction in Bradford on Avon is the big Grade II* listed tithe barn, referred to as the Saxon Tithe Barn, which is 180 feet by 30 feet and was constructed in the 14th century and is now part of Barton Farm Country Park. The barn would have been used for collecting taxes in the form of goods in order to fund the church. There are lots of notable buildings in and around the town centre. Many of the historic textile factories have been converted into modern flats and apartments, although a handful of the buildings are still used nowadays for their traditional purpose. How can I tell what type of damp I’ve got?

How can I tell if my property has damp?

There are a few visible signs of damp, although it often goes undetected. However, in older or empty properties, this made become detectable through its smell. These include peeling paint and wallpaper, crumbling plaster, mould growth, black spots or spores on walls and ceilings, and rotting skirting boards and flooring.

Why is it important to fix a damp problem?
