The London Borough of Hounslow is a London borough in west London, England, forming a part of Outer London. The borough was formed in 1965, under the London Government Act 1963, by the merger of the area of the former Brentford and Chiswick Urban District, Feltham Urban District and the Heston and Isleworth Urban District of Middlesex. Hounslow covers a total area of around 21.61 square miles. The borough stretches from near Central London to the east to the border with Surrey in the west, covering Chiswick, Brentford, Isleworth and Feltham in addition to Hounslow itself.
As outlined by population estimates in the middle of 2014, the borough features a permanent population of about 265568 people.
The Great West Road, which crosses the borough from Chiswick to Heathrow, formerly served nationally and globally well-known manufacturers such as Firestone, Gillette and Coty. Consequently, the borough became generally known as the 'Golden Mile'. Several of these factory sites remain, including Gillette Corner, and also the Great West Road is still residence to numerous prestigious names, supplying them with easy non-motorway access between Slough, London Heathrow Airport and Central London. Other notable landmarks consist of Osterley Park, Gunnersbury Park, Syon House, the London Museum of Water and Steam, and Chiswick House.
