Larne is a civil parish, a seaport and industrial market town on the east coast of County Antrim in Northern Ireland. In accordance with the 2011 Census, there is a permanent population of 32000 locals, which means that the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency has categorised Larne as a Large Town. Coupled with the adjoining district of Carrickfergus and a section of Newtonabbey, it constitutes the East Antrim constituency for the elections to the Westminster Parliament and the Northern Ireland Assembly. Larne is the home of Ballylumford power station, which is the principal power station in Northern Ireland that supplies half of Northern Ireland's electricity. There is a wide choice of shops in Larne Main Street, Dunlunce Street and Laharna Retail Park, presenting residents and visitors a mix of independent and commercial chain stores. There is also a variety of large grocery stores off the Harbour Highway. Every Wednesday a variety market is held at the Larne Market Yard. There is a number of parks readily available to members of the public. The town park lies above the picturesque boardwalk area, with walks from Waterloo Bay towards the Chaine Memorial at Sandy Bay. This is a lighthouse and a remembrance to the creator of Larne Harbour sea route to Scotland. The Curran Park is especially popular, providing a large children's playing area, bowling and a camping area.
