What Does a Lawn Treatment Option Entail?

Prior to any kind of professional treatment starts, your turf professional will certainly see the building and evaluate the turf state to allow them to advise the most ideal treatments options. The evaluation might include soil samples, identifying the most noticeable turf kind, the grass density as well as colouration of your grass.

Depending on the kind of treatment option required, the method of application varies.

Some treatments options, such as lawn feed as well as fungicides are splashed onto grass, making sure to cover afflicted as well as wanted areas. After these treatments have been applied its suggested that turf isn't watered afterwards, preferably for a couple of days, to enable the products to pass through the grass.

  1. Scarification and also oygenation are hands-on jobs, involving physically steering expert equipment across the grass to break up and also eliminate thatch that restrains lawn development. Some clean-up may be called for afterwards to remove undesirable thatch as well as dirt plugs.
  2. Topdressing is likewise a hands-on procedure, layering an natural mix of composted materials across the turf to add nutrients, adhered to by cleaning or raking into the ground to ensure penetration.
  3. Nematodes are also used with a spraying process, yet as they are living organisms, several experts advise watering the turf before their application to make sure that there is enough moisture in the dirt for them to penetrate the ground as well as flourish.
  4. Overseeding - To prepare a grass for overseeding, it's suggested that the location is either raked before application if there is little thatch, or scarification may be required for more neglected lawns-- This will certainly allow the lawn seeds better contact with the soil, allowing for even more effective germination. Once the turf is ready, overseeding does not need machinery; instead, the products can be hand sown right into the preferred locations.

Common grass troubles

Sadly, turf concerns are not rare as well as lots of property owners struggle to recover a usable grass regardless of regular mowing. Below is a listing of the most usual turf troubles:

  • Infrequent mowing: improper mowing can trigger severe grass damages. The excellent elevation for lawn is 2.5 centimeters and also if you go listed below this you run the risk of the grass passing away along with scorching from the sunlight. If you do not feel confident mowing your turf it is feasible to work with a expert. To find out more see our guide to lawn cutting costs.
  • Undesirable weeds on lawn: Surprisingly, some weeds can be fairly attractive but despite their appearance, they require to be eliminated before your turf endures. They need nutrients as well as water to expand and get these by stealing from your grass, triggering damage to your grass. Weeds are really common yet with the appropriate treatments they can be a distant memory.
  • Pests: Frustratingly, grass pests can be really usual and also cause damages to your grass if left without treatment. Typical pests include leather coats, ants, moles, worms as well as chafer grubs.
  • Moss: Moss is really usual, normally appears when lawns are cut also short and also loves sheltered, damp areas. Can be successfully removed with raking.
  • Lawn disease: There are lots of types of lawn illness that not just affect the look of turfs yet can cause damage to the origins and also the blades of lawn themselves. Typical kinds include fairy rings (a fungal disease), leaf curse and rust illness.
  • Dry areas: During summer season when warmer climate prevails, turfs can dry out creating patches of discoloured, passing away turf. Constant watering is a must especially when there has been no rain for a while.
  • Mushrooms: Although you may not desire mushrooms expanding in your back garden, they are actually a clear indicator of a all-natural, healthy lawn. The drawback to mushrooms is that they can be dangerous to humans and also pets consequently choosing or cutting to eliminate them is a good idea, especially if you have little ones as well as pet dogs.

FAQs

how to lay a lawn?

Laying a lawn is a task that’s best left to the professionals especially if you don’t know what you’re doing. However, if you can follow a simple logical process, you’ll save yourself a lot of headache – simply start from the edge and work inwards. If you’re looking to lay your lawn by yourself, then you’ve come to the right place! In this post, we’re going to consider the processes involved in lawn installation in order to ensure your project turns out a success. Let’s take a look!

Firstly, the tools you’re going to need to lay your lawn includes the following – sturdy boots, gardening gloves (should be thick), wheel barrow, garden fork or rotovator, landscaping rake, laying boards, knife or edge trimmer, hosepipe and broom.

  1. Start from the outside edge. Install the initial strips horizontally overlapping the boundary a bit (trim the back once done). Press down carefully to make sure there’s a good contact with the soil (make sure not to squash the lawn).
  2. Proceed to lay the adjacent pieces till the first row of the lawn along the entire edge is completed.
  3. Continue with the next row. If there’s a need to stand on the laid turf, simply make use of a plank so as to avoid squashing or denting the turf. It’s important to ensure the successive rows are staggered to prevent the short edges from lining up.
  4. Proceed by butting and pushing the edges to create a tight joint (make sure the turf is not stretched).
  5. Use a wood saw or sharp serrated knife to trim any untidy edges. Remember to make use of a plank to ensure you do not walk directly on the turf.
  6. Water the newly installed turf adequately to ensure the water penetrates the soil. However, do not turn it into a mud bath.
When should I scarify my lawn?

Scarification is the name given to the process where you remove excess thatch and moss from your lawn to encourage it to grow and look healthy. Although it sounds difficult, it’s actually pretty easy – simply grab a sturdy rake and apply moderate pressure to rake out moss, thatch and dead grass. Then collect it up and add to your compost heap if you have one. You can also use a petrol or electric rake, but you just want to tease out the moss and thatch. Don’t be tempted to go deep into the grass, as this could damage your lawn. So when should you scarify your lawn? The experts say that the best time is in the autumn, when the grass is actively growing and it’s not too hot, cold or dry. Most of summer’s weed seeds will have gone, so you won’t encourage weeds to grow in the raked-up soil. This soil also makes an ideal seed bed for over seeding with new grass seed, so that’s why you don’t want to get weeds in there as well. However, you may also carry out light scarification in the spring – usually around April. Make sure you don’t go too far though – as you will end up with a rather disfigured lawn if you scarify too heavily and the dryness of summer stops the lawn from recovering. It’s also best to scarify your lawn in the spring if the following apply:

  • If you couldn’t do it the previous autumn – if you keep putting it off, you might end up with extreme moss and weed growth
  • If your lawn is shaded – these areas will thin over winter and start to thicken from spring onwards, so if you scarify in the autumn you’ll make your lawn even thinner.
  • If your lawn is under trees – pair the shade from the trees with the fall of leaves in the autumn and your grass won’t be healthy, but in the spring the trees are bare, allowing lots of light onto your lawn to help it grow.
When is the best time to start a lawn renovation?

First and foremost, to save your time and money when it comes to lawn renovation, there’s a huge need to figure out why the lawn isn’t doing well in the first place. A lot of times, when changes are made to the basic lawn care practices, cultural practices or site conditions, any need for a renovation would be thrown out the window as the lawn would be given a new life with good health and vigour. However, if you feel renovation is the best option for your lawn, then you’ve come to the right place! In this post, we’re going to consider the best time to start a lawn renovation to help put you on the right path. Let’s take a look!

There are two times during the year that are most suitable for lawn renovation. Firstly, the best time for renovation of a lawn is usually from mid-August to mid-September. Secondly, another great time to achieve this goal is normally during early spring as the lawn is starting to turn green and grow.

So, when do you consider lawn renovation?

  • When the quality of the lawn is simply poor and unacceptable.
  • During the introduction of lower maintenance turf varieties into an existing lawn.
  • When 30% to 50% of the lawn is dead or is experiencing sparse growth which may be due to several factors like drought and heat, low soil fertility, insect damage, moderate soil compaction and more.
  • When the lawn is soft and spongy will walking across. Plus, if it also responds terribly to the application of fertilizer and water.
  • When grassy weeds or broad-leaved weeds covers about 30 to 40 percent of the lawn area with insufficient turf cover to fill in the bare areas once the weed removal is done.
How to overseed a lawn?

Overseeding your lawn is an essential part of keeping your lawn looking its best. It’s also known as reseeding, and helps to repair damaged areas that might have been caused by a harsh summer or winter. It’s best to overseed your lawn during the spring or autumn, when the temperature is mild but there’s still a fair amount of rainy days to help the grass seed grow. To prepare your lawn for overseeding, you should do the following things around 1-2 weeks beforehand:

  • Weed the lawn by hand or using a weedkiller (make sure you leave enough time to do this according to the instructions)
  • Remove stones and large twigs
  • Scarify your lawn to remove moss and loosen soil
  • Fertilise the soil with a quick-release fertiliser

Once you’ve taken these steps, you’re ready to start overseeding your lawn.

  1. Mow your lawn to around 25mm in length.
  2. Water the soil so it’s moist but not too damp.
  3. Sprinkle your new grass seed evenly over the lawn, but apply more in patchy or thin areas. Generally gardeners say to use 35g per square metre, but up to 50g on thin areas.

When you’re finished, give your lawn a final water, and do this every day until the new grass is established – particularly if it’s not rained. Just make sure you don’t overwater it. It’s also a good idea not to walk on your lawn for around 2-3 weeks after you’ve overseeded it.
