Loft conversion companies in Kenley

Are you thinking of a loft conversion so that you can open up space in your home to avoid the requirement to relocate? Then use our no cost and easy service to compare quotes to get the best cost for the work you would like carried out.

Loft conversions are proving to become increasingly popular in the UK. In most households the loft accounts for unused space which may go to better use. Converting can turn the space into a bedroom, bathroom, playroom or maybe ensuite bedroom.

The fact is there's lots of potential to transforming your loft, such as added value for your own home which may be up to 20%. Loft space conversions are also recommended over a household extension as the infrastructure is already in place. Furthermore, you won't be taking away any garden space.

If a loft space conversion would benefit the home and you're seeking more space, compare and contrast quotations from reliable companies within Kenley and get the best offer for the work you wish completed.

Kenley

Kenley is a district in the south of the London Borough of Croydon (traditionally in Surrey). Kenley is located 13 miles south of Charing Cross. Significant sections of Kenley lie within the Metropolitan Green Belt. Specifically, the south of Kenley is dominated by the open green spaces of Kenley Common and Kenley Aerodrome. The 2011 census showed Kenley having a population of 14,966. For centuries, Kenley belonged to Coulsdon Manor which covered the entire area and was mainly farm land, with a handful of big houses and their estates. The formal opening of the train on 4 August 1856 changed Kenley. The new railway prompted urban progression. By the end of the Victorian era, Kenley had assumed its own identity. Kenley Common comprises fifty-six hectares of green open space surrounding a previous Battle of Britain airfield. It is a mix of chalk grassland and ancient woodland set among gently rolling hills. Blessed with fine views across the Caterham valley and the North Downs beyond, visitors find it tough to think that the centre of London is just 14 miles to the north. Among Kenley's landmark structures is the Memorial Hall. It was opened in 1922 to remember those who offered their lives in World War I. It was subsequently extended and re-opened by Group Captain Douglas Bader in 1975. Hammond Innes' book Attack Alarm was based upon his experiences as a Royal Artillery anti-aircraft gunner at RAF Kenley during the Battle of Britain. It features graphic descriptions of the station and attacks on it in 1940. English Heritage described Kenley as the "most complete fighter airfield associated with the Battle of Britain to have actually survived". For all of your home developments, make certain to find trustworthy contractors in Kenley to make certain of quality.

FAQs

how long does a loft conversion take?

If you’re about to carry out a loft conversion project, you’d probably be wondering how long it’ll take to complete the task. Well, you’re not alone! This is one of the most common questions when it comes to loft conversion projects, however, providing a set timeframe for completion of such projects is impossible as all loft conversions vary. There are different factors that can determine the duration of your project. These factors include, the materials to be used, the type of the proposed loft conversion, the kind of staircase you’ll like to have installed, the number of windows included, the number of rooms to be added as well as a number of other influencing factors. As a result of these variables, the milestones and timings provided are only to be taken as guidelines. If you’d really like to have a set date, you can get in touch with a professional for help.

Generally, it’ll take up to 8 weeks to complete a loft conversion project.

✓ The first week activities will include putting up scaffolding, receiving the first materials for the build and creating an opening in the roof to gain access to the loft space.

✓ In the second week, the structure of the roof will be ammended and more support added.

✓ Third week, the floor joists will be fitted, building of the loft conversion will start, completion of the external roof works and commencement of plumbing and electric works.

✓ Fourth week, complete the building, construct the loft floor, fit the roof windows, insulation, ventilation and internal stud walls.

✓ Fifth week, apply plaster and plasterboard to the room walls, create a staircase opening and fit the new staircase.

✓ Sixth week, plaster the staircase area, complete plumbing and electrical works, hang the doors, fit skirting, handrails and bannisters and start decoration.

✓ Seventh week, complete the decoration and clean and wipe out all wastes.

✓ Eight week, complete all the remaining tasks.

what is a dormer loft conversion?

A dormer loft conversion is a type of loft conversion that’s built making use of a roof’s existing slope. In other words, it’s an existing roof’s extension which is constructed in such a way that allows for an additional floor as well as head room especially suitable for lofts lacking good amount of usable space. The dormer loft conversion is simply an addition to the existing roof looking much like a box-like build constructed onto a pitched roof as it creates walls that are vertical to the slope while also being 90 degrees to the floor.

This type of loft conversion is the most common amongst homeowners in the UK mainly because it represents a cost effective means through which you can add an additional usable space to your home or property. The structure extends for the slope of the existing roof and can easily be altered to suit various tastes or styles. Furthermore, if you’re looking for a type of loft conversion that aids to foster reduced disruption to work, then dormer loft conversion is also your best bet. This is due to the fact that the structure is built from a scaffolding made outside a home.

There are different types of dormer loft conversion and the one which will best suit your property will depend on the property type, be it detached, semi detached or terraced as well as the existing roof shape and size. The dormer loft conversion is a popular choice for a lot of homeowners for a variety of reasons. Let’s have a look!

✓ It’s very cost effective

✓ The dormer loft conversion does not require planning permission so far it complies with certain conditions and limitations

✓ It adds an extra headspace as well as floor space.

what is a hip to gable loft conversion?

This is a type of loft conversion that extends your roof on the sloping side. It is a great option to go for especially where a hipped roof effectively makes the usable floor area a lot smaller which can be a tricky affair when it comes to putting in a new staircase. Here, the roof is extended from the current ridge in such a way that it effectively fills the gap between them. As a result, this turns the hip (in a hipped roof) into a gable to create space in your roof for a loft conversion - hence the name “hip to gable.

The new gable can be done in whatever way that suits both your taste as well as your property. You can make the new gable construction in woods and then tiled to match your existing roof while you can also go for other options such as brick block pebbledash or rendering. You are also free to fit in a new window into the loft conversion end so as to allow for natural light into the loft space.

A hip to gable loft conversion is mostly found on both semi detached and end terrace buildings, particularly those constructed in the 1930s. Overall, this type of loft conversion is particularly ideal for homes that features a hipped roof and with a sloping roof at the side of the property. Some detached properties can also possess a hipped roof on the side - and as such, a double hip to gable loft conversion can also be deal as it’ll create more loft space for usage. If your home fits into the bill, then you should be aware that once the project is completed, you’ll have plenty of usable space available to both you and your loved ones.

Will I need planning permission to convert my loft?

Planning permission is not normally needed for a loft conversion as they are covered by permitted development rights. A conversion company will tell you if you do and help you with this. For more information, see our article about planning permission.
