The sorts of roofing insulation readily available depend upon the kind of roof that it will be utilized with. With a pitched roof, either warm or chilly loft space insulation can be appropriate. Cold loft space insulation is the most affordable option, simply involving putting insulation beyond wooden joists. However, as this only prevents warmth escaping the living location of the home, it isn't suitable for those wanting to covert the loft space into a living room. Warm loft space insulation is positioned straight under the roofing, and for this reason will certainly maintain the loft area at a continuous temperature over the program of the year. Thus, it is ideal if the loft is utilized as a home. Warm loft space insulation is available in different forms, be it glass-wool or polystyrene. Spray foams can additionally be utilized, but in many cases might be unsuitable.

The most usual kind of loft insulation, this comes in rolls of rock, glass or mineral fiber (we utilize Earthwool by Knauf which is a really great environmentally friendly choice), or else foil-backed really felt. It's normally the most affordable option and also excellent all-purpose insulation, specifically for in between joists. It's the simplest kind to fit yet isn't ideal for the roofing system.

Loose-fill Insulation

This type of insulation includes a loose, light-weight, material, such as cork granules, cellulose fibre, mineral wool or perhaps recycled paper. It can be utilized to top up existing insulation or on its own. The primary downside is it isn't really protected and can be truly unpleasant!

Sheet Insulation

Firm boards of either synthetic or all-natural materials, this is the very best service for protecting the underside of your roof. The boards provide highly reliable insulation for your loft area and also can additionally be embellished over. The disadvantage is that sheet insulation tends to be the most expensive kind.

Blown-fibre Insulation

Loose products of different kinds blown in between joists, this is ideal for hard-to-get-at places but does not provide a full remedy, especially in a draughty loft. It's also costly as well as needs to be set up by a specialist.

Peacehaven

Peacehaven is a town and civil parish in the Lewes district of East Sussex, England. The town covers a total area of around 2 square miles. It is situated above the chalk cliffs of the South Downs around 6 miles (9.7 km) east of Brighton city centre, on the A259 road. The pebble beach below the cliffs can be reached by a stairs and concrete driveway and sea walk. There is a variety of green spaces along the A259 and the cliffs, among which is called The Dell. A cinema previously stood on this site, and now it holds events such as car boot sales, fireworks, fairgrounds, motorhome exhibitions, the Donkey Derby and an annual carnival, though in 2005 the carnival was held on the Joff field found behind the Meridian shopping centre. In the 1950s, the carnival stalls were located on the then unused land on the NW corner of the South Coast Road (A259) and Dorothy Avenue. Its site coincides with the point where the Greenwich meridian crosses the English south coast. The Greenwich meridian is marked by a 3.5 m (11 feet) tall obelisk, commissioned by Charles Neville. It was introduced on 10 August 1936 and has been transferred twice due to erosion of the cliffs. The parish includes part of the Brighton to Newhaven Cliffs Site of Special Scientific Interest. The cliffs are mainly of geological interest, having many different Santonian and Campanian fossils. The SSSI listing features plants and animals biological interest too. According to the 2011 Census, the town has a permanent resident population of around 14067 people. For all of your home refurbishments, make certain to identify credible professionals in Peacehaven to make certain of quality.

FAQs

how much loft insulation do I need?

Over the years, more and more home and property owners are beginning to realize the huge benefits that can be derived from loft insulation being a worthwhile investment. It’s quite worrisome the way in which energy bills have soared over the past 10 years and loft insulation is a considerable affordable energy efficiency measure that can go a long way to help increase your home’s energy savings.

As far back as the 1980’s, the standard when it comes to insulation thickness was 25 mm to 50 mm which was, at the time, considered to be sufficient. However, building regulations have changed the norm that now states that a new build needs to possess 270 mm of insulation in the loft in order to achieve the required u-value of less than 0.16/m2k based on the standard rock wool or sheep wool insulation.

Generally with loft insulation, there’s a law of depreciating returns which implies that the first couple of insulation centimetres will save you many times the cost of the installation, however an extra layer or centimetre is going to add less value to the point where it’ll no longer be wise or worthwhile to add any further centimetre. Therefore, with cheaper energy prices 30 years back, that additional couple of centimetres was not just worthwhile, but with the recent alarming rises in costs of fuel, that additional £10 savings per year has all of sudden changed to £30 which makes it become a lot more attractive.

If you already have 270 mm of loft insulation, regardless of the material you’re looking to add you’re most likely not going to benefit from a top up. The cost of the materials and installation will definitely be too high for the couple of pounds it’ll save you per year.

what is the best loft insulation?

If you have a loft, then the next thing that’s crucial is a loft insulation. Asides from cutting down on your carbon footprint, when you’re able to install an effective loft insulation you can slash your heating bills by up to £250 per year. What’s more? Besides making your home more energy efficient, it can also increase the value of your property a great deal. So if you’re also considering the insulation of your loft, one of the few things that comes to mind is, what loft insulation is the best to incorporate? In order to help you make the best informed decision possible, this post is going to address this issue and put you on the right path.

In truth, there’s no way to say exactly which type of insulation is the best as all types usually have a different purpose as well as usage. The insulation you choose for your home’s loft is be based largely on the how you’re going to make use of the space as well as any unique challenges you might face given the shape of your home’s loft. Below are some types of insulation to give you a better idea:

  • Blanket insulation. This is the most common type that comes in rolls of rock, glass or mineral fibre ( or foil-backed felt ). It normally the most affordable and also a good all-purpose insulation which is easy to fit although not suitable for the roof.
  • Loose-fill insulation. This type of insulation features a loose, lightweight material such as cork granules, cellulose fibre, mineral wool etc. It can either be incorporated as a top up or on its own. The primary drawback is it isn’t very secure and can also be very messy.
  • Sheet insulation. This is the best solution for the roof’s underside as it offers a highly effective insulation for your loft space and can also be decorated over. The drawback here is that it’s usually the most expensive type to purchase and install.
Will insulation save me money on my energy bills?

This depends on the amount of insulation already present in your property. However, adding insulation has been proven to improve the energy efficiency of your home and decrease your heating bills, this is more obvious in older properties or where single glazing is still in situ.

Is loft insulation flammable?

When thinking about the right insulation material for your loft, some of the first few things that comes to mind is the various properties of that material as well as how good they fit with your home’s needs.naturally, you’d like to ensure that the insulation will be efficient enough to add to the overall energy efficiency of your home, however there are also other features that may not get as much attention but also happens to be equally important. As the primary function of an insulation is to blanket your house to offer a barrier against heat loss, going for an insulation material that’s also fireproof is crucial as loft insulation can burn. Although most insulation materials are fireproof, a myriad of problems can actually make your insulation burn.

For instance, fibreglass insulation is produced using glass combined with plastic polymers and is naturally resistant to fire. However, even at that you’d have to be careful with batts that are supported with foil or paper due to the fact that these materials can burn pretty quickly. Cellulose, on the other hand, is not fireproof and is required to be treated by other flame retardants in order to help reduce combustion. Some of the best insulation materials that are resistant to fire includes the following:

  • Fibre glass. This is made of glass that’s spun into fibres, then combined using plastic polymers. As a result, fiberglass insulation is naturally resistant to fire.
  • Mineral wool. Having a high melting temperature, this insulation material happens to be a great fit for thermal applications due to its superior fire resistant properties. In fact, mineral wool is still naturally non-combustible even if composed of recycled iron and steel by-products, or from actual mineral rock itself.
