Welwyn

Welwyn (population 8,425) is a village as well as civil parish in Hertfordshire, England. The parish additionally consists of the towns of Digswell and also Oaklands. It is sometimes called Old Welwyn to identify it from the much more recent negotiation of Welwyn Garden City, about a mile to the south, though some homeowners dislike the pointer of inferiority or irrelevance that tends to be suggested by the name "Old" as well as choose Welwyn Town. When stating where they live, citizens will usually be asked, 'Welwyn or Welwyn Garden City?', as the latter's title is frequently reduced to just Welwyn. To avoid confusion, there were strategies to change Welwyn's name to 'Welwyn Minster' in 1990 but this met regional resistance as well as the idea was deserted. The name is derived from Old English welig meaning "willow", referring to the trees that snuggle on the banks of the River Mimram as it streams through the town. The name itself is an advancement from weligun, the dative type of words, and so is much more exactly translated as "at the willows", unlike neighboring Willian which is most likely to suggest simply "the willows". With having its name derived from welig as opposed to sealh (the much more typically pointed out Old English word for willow), Welwyn is perhaps cognate with Heligan in Cornwall whose name is stemmed from helygen, the Cornish word for willow that shares a root with welig. The close-by modern-day town of Digswell (around Welwyn North railway station) was initially called 'High Welwyn' when first developed at the start of the 20th century.
