It is located 9 miles south west of Leeds. Historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it is also close to Cleckheaton and Liversedge. Located at the side of the Pennine hills, the land climbs to the north, east and south of the town centre. In total, the area covered by the town is 1 square mile. By 1811, the Blanket Hall was completed to enrich trade in the town's most important manufacture. It was replaced by another hall in 1839 on Blanket Hall Street, although the remains of the first hall remained in the town till the spring of 2008 when a range of old structures were destroyed. The remains of the Power Company buildings, however, continue to exist in the town, despite the fact that the town stopped generating electricity in 1924.
