Solar Panel Installer FAQs

How long does a Tesla Powerwall battery last?

Tesla’s top-of-the-range battery storage system is still one of the most expensive on the market. It has a huge 13.5kWh usable capacity and can even keep you up and running during a power cut. But how long does a Tesla Powerwall battery last? And does this mean it’s worth investing in one?

The Tesla Powerwall 2.0 comes with a 10-year warranty. But Tesla says that it should last way beyond this – at least 5 years longer. The standard warranty says that it should work at 70% capacity for the full 10 years – so if it loses more than 30% of its storage capacity within that time, it should still be covered.

While the Tesla Powerwall does last a long time, it has a large capacity that most average households won’t require, and it’s a costly option. After installation, the Powerwall 2.0 will set you back between £6,500 and £9,000, so ideally you want it to last past its 10-year warranty.

Before you splash out, consider the size of the solar panel system you want to install or you already have. Will it generate enough electricity to make it worth storing in the Powerwall? If not, are you expecting to upgrade your solar panels to a larger system in the future? If you are, then it might be worth investing in a Powerwall. It might also be better to wait until you come to upgrade your solar panels – the solar battery price trend is going the same way as solar panels, so they will probably continue to decrease in price as more people adopt the technology.

Which commercial property are 4-10kW commercial solar panels best for?

It’s important to get the right size solar panel system for your commercial property. Solar panels are usually installed on pitched roofs, although they can be fitted on stands on the ground if you have some unused outdoor space. The more panels you install, the more power you’ll generate, but there’s no point buying more panels than you have space for.

Solar panel system sizes are measured in kW. 4-10kW solar panel systems are usually too big for domestic properties but are ideal for smaller commercial properties. Here’s an idea of how many panels and space you’ll need for a few different system sizes:

System size, Number of panels, Area required (approximate)

4kW, 16, 23m²

6kW, 24, 35m²

8kW, 32, 46m²

10kw, 40, 58m²

Bear in mind that solar panels can’t be less than 30cm away from a roof edge, so you’ll need more space than the area that the panels take up.

Can solar thermal be used for central heating?

Yes – solar thermal can be used for central heating. Solar thermal panels work by collecting heat from the sun, either through evacuated tubes or flat plate collectors, and transferring that to a heat transfer liquid that heats your hot water. This can then be used to preheat your central heating.

You’ll need a hot water cylinder to store the water that your solar thermal panels heat up. It’s likely that you’ll need an immersion heater or boiler to heat the water further so you can use it for your central heating, and as a back-up during the longest winter months since the solar panels won’t be able to generate as much heat.

In our opinion, it’s best to use your solar thermal panels for hot water rather than your central heating. That’s because you use hot water all year round, whereas you probably won’t have your central heating on in the spring and summer, when the panels can generate the most heat. For central heating, air- or ground-source heat pumps are a great renewable option, and you can even power them with electricity from solar PV panels if you want to be as eco-friendly as possible.

How often should you clean solar panels

To have your solar panels working at full strength at all times is crucial as this can go a long way to help you reduce your energy bill. In order to achieve this, you simply can’t afford to ignore having them regularly cleaned and free from all sorts of dirt, dust, debris, pollen, bird droppings and the likes. Now it’s quite reasonable to think rain or wind should be able to get the job done, but unfortunately this is not so. What solar panels need is a proper clean which you can decide to do by yourself or call in a qualified professional – the latter which is strongly recommended.

Cleaning of solar panels has to do with working at heights which can be very dangerous especially if you don’t have enough confidence to pull it off. And even if you have zero phobia for heights, solar panel cleaning requires experience as well as some specialized skills and tools possessed by the professionals. However, the question here is, how often should solar panels be cleaned to keep them operating at optimal efficiency?

Well, according to the manufacturers, solar panels should be cleaned twice a year. However, if this is something that you feel is not achievable by you, then you should at least give then an annual clean. The best or most advisable time to do this during the year is at the end of the summer months. This will ensure that you have a fully functioning solar array which is ready and prepared to withstand whatever the cold period throws at you. At the end of the day, you’d have them looking spotless clean while also working at full strength and reducing your energy bills.

Should I clean solar PV panels myself

If your solar panels are mounted on your roof and you require a ladder to reach them we would always recommend you get a professional to do the work for your own safety.

How much energy does a solar panel produce?

How much energy a solar panel produces depends on its manufacturer and exposure to the sun. A good-quality solar panel typically has a power output of about 300 watts per hour, but this can vary from about 240 to 360 watts. How much energy your solar panel will produce per day depends on how many hours of unshaded daylight it’s exposed to.

Here’s an idea of how much energy you could expect a large commercial solar panel installation to produce in a year.

Solar panel system size, No. of solar panels, Annual electricity output

11kW, 44, 9,350kW

20kW, 80, 17,000kW

30kW, 120, 25,500kW

40kW, 160, 34,000kW

50kW, 200, 42,500kW

How many solar thermal panels do I need?
Generally, the amount of solar thermal panels you need depends on the number of people living in your home. Experts say that as a rule of thumb you’ll need 1m2 of solar panels for each adult living in your home. So if you live in a 4-person household, you can expect an MCS-registered installer to recommend you a 4m2 system. However, if you have any obstructions near your home that could increase shade on your panels, you might be encouraged to go up to nearer 2m2 per person. You want to make sure that your panels can produce enough hot water for your home as you’ll rely less on your back-up form of heating, which might be a gas boiler or electric immersion heater. Maximise the free energy from the sun and you could save up to £60 per year if you have a gas boiler, £70 if you have an immersion heater or £100 if you have an LPG boiler. Of course, you’ll also need to make sure you’ve got enough roof space for the amount of solar thermal panels that you want, but your installer will be able to advise you on the best course of action.
how much to install solar panels and battery?

How Much To Install Solar Panels And Battery?

Are you thinking about installing solar panels and battery in your home and wondering how much the installation is going to cost? Well, you’re not alone. This is one of the most commonly asked questions in the solar world, but unfortunately a precise answer can not be provided. This is mainly due to the fact that solar panel systems come in varying sizes which is the main influencing factor that determines how much electricity that can be generated. In other words, the larger the system, the more the electricity that’ll be produced to your home’s benefit.

Generally, for a solar system size of 1kW, the average cost of the solar panel ranges between £1800 to £1850, 2kW is between £3600 to £3700, solar panel size of 3kW ranges between £5500 to £5600 and finally, 4kW is between £6000 to £6050. For example, with the aforementioned prices in mind, the cost of solar panels for a standard 3 bedroom house will range between £5520 to £6040 as the high electricity demands will need the installation of 3 to 4kW solar system size.

Meanwhile the installation cost of solar batteries is also dependent on a number of influencing factors like the size as well as the make of the battery. Generally, you can expect to spend within the range of £500 to £2000 to install your batteries depending on aforementioned factors. In the event whereby you’ll be retrofitting, you might also need to include an additional cost of £1000 for an inverter. However, it’s important to note that there are only quite a few hybrid systems which are able to combine a battery storage with an inverter.
