Banbridge

The town of Banbridge is in Northern Ireland's County Down. It's located on the River Bann plus a dual carriageway, with its name derived from a bridge that was built over the River Bann in 1712. It's a part of the civil parish of Seapatrick plus the historic barony of Iveagh Upper, Upper Half. Banbridge is at the moment the administrative base for the Banbridge District Council. As per the 2011 Census, the town has a resident population of around 16653. It is categorised as a medium town and within the population, 24.4% were under 16 years old, 16.1 percent were more than 60 years of age, and 49.5% were male, leaving 50.5 percent as female. In its infancy, the town was a coach stop for the road in between Belfast and Dublin, and it prospered from the manufacture of Irish linen. A striking feature of the town is its recognisable main street, which rises to a steep hill before levelling out. An underpass had to be built in 1834 because of the demanding street causing horses carrying heavy loads to faint before they could get to the top . Constructed by William Dargan, it's officially called the Downshire Bridge, even though it's frequently referred to as 'The Cut'. The town is extensively known for being close to the Bronte Homeland in Rathfriland, attracting quite a few guests who visit this location. An additional attraction is the annual busking festival, 'Buskfest', which has been running since 2004. Participants have frequently travelled extended distances to busk, plus the event finishes with an evening concert including performances by world-famous artists. For all your house improvements, make certain that you use vetted experts in Banbridge to make sure you get the best quality service.

FAQs

How to measure the glass for a window replacement?
If the glass in your window has been damaged, you might only need to replace that rather than your whole window frame. Common reasons for needing to replace the glass in your window include:
  • The glass has smashed from an impact such as a stone hitting it from a lawnmower
  • You have been broken into and suspects used the window to gain entry
  • The glass has blown (lost its airtightness) from constant water build-up around the seals, which is common in bathrooms
  • Extreme weather or pressure changes have caused a crack
If your frames are still intact and there’s nothing wrong with your window’s locks or trims, there’s no reason why you can’t just replace the sealed unit in your window. To help with the quotation process, a window installer may ask you to measure the glass for your window replacement. It’s pretty simple to just measure the sealed unit inside your window. There are just 3 steps you need to take:
  1. Including the beading (the plastic and rubber seals around the windows that can be removed), measure the width of the window frame.
  2. Do the same for the height of the window, making sure you include the beading.
  3. Then, take 10mm off each measurement, and you have the approximate size of your glass.
A reputable window installer will still make their own measurements before confirming the size of the glass in your window and going ahead and ordering the replacement. Make sure you get a range of quotes from local and national installers so you can compare the price and their quotation process.
How much is it to repair the glass in a window?
Accidents happen, and sometimes windows get broken. And that will lead to you wanting to replace just the glass in your window, rather than the whole frame. Also, as windows get older they can mist up on the inside, which means that the unit has ‘blown’ - so you’ll also need to replace the glass. But how much is it to replace the glass in a window? Luckily, if the frame of your window is in good condition, there’s no need to replace it, and this will reduce the cost. For an installer to fit a new pane of glass in a single glazed window, the average cost is £100, while a replacement double glazed sealed unit will cost an average of £110. Of course, as this is an average, if your window is very large you may spend more, and if your window is very small the price may be less. That's why it’s important to get a range of quotes so you can compare costs and get the best price. If you’re good at DIY, you may feel confident enough to have a go at replacing the glass in your window yourself. In that case, the cost of sealed unit and any other materials you need will cost an average of £57. It’s a significant saving, and if you think you can do it, then give it a try. However, if you’re in any way unsure, it’s best to leave it to the professionals. A window installer will be able to replace the glass in your window in less than an hour. Even though it costs more for a professional to do it, if you get it wrong and have to start over it will cost you more in the long run.
Can the glass in a double glazed window be replaced?
Yes, the glass in a double glazed window can be replaced. The glass in a window, or sealed unit to use its proper name, is not permanently attached to your window frames so if it gets damaged but your frames are still intact, there’s no need to replace the whole window. The glass in your double glazed window might need to be replaced due to:
  • Impact from a stone or other object smashing the glass in a ‘bullseye’ effect
  • The result of a break-in
  • Extreme weather or changes in pressure causing a crack
  • The sealed unit being ‘blown’, meaning that it’s no longer energy efficient due to air leaking out
A lot of window installers will replace the glass in your double glazing for you, but you might need to get quotes from specialist glaziers too. Glaziers deal purely with the glass in windows rather than installing entire frames. It won’t take a professional very long to replace the glass in your window. They will remove the beading from around the window with a pallet knife or chisel, leaving the top one until last to keep the sealed unit stable. Then, they simply lift out the glass carefully and will discuss with you whether the removal of the old sealed unit is included in their quote. Next, they will brush away any dust and debris that’s made its way into the frame and place spacers at the bottom. They will then lift the new glass into the frame, making sure it’s completely square. When they’re happy, they’ll remove the spacers and replace the beading back in reverse order. You’ll notice the replacement glass in your new window straight away as draughts should be eliminated and you’ll be able to see clearly again!
Do I need toughened glass in my windows?

Whether you need toughened glass in your windows depends on where the windows are in your home or business. Toughened glass is sometimes referred to as tempered or safety glass, and it just means it’s stronger than the standard glass that’s usually offered with double glazed windows. So how do you know if you need it?

Toughened glass is useful in areas of your home where you might come into contact with the windows if you were to trip and fall. If you put your hands out to steady yourself on standard glass the chances are it would break into large sharp pieces with jagged edges. Of course, this means that you could seriously cut yourself if this were to happen. With toughened glass, the structure of the glass is changed so that if it breaks it shatters into lots of tiny pieces, minimising the risk to you if you were to fall on it.

You might want to use toughened glass in patio doors, low windows or frames next to doors. It just means that you will be safer if the unlikely happens and you or a family member falls through the glass. There are certain requirements through Building Regulations with windows at a certain level, but any reputable window installer should be able to go through these with you if you need to replace your windows with toughened glass. The regulations will only apply to new windows – there's no need to switch your windows to toughened glass early, but when you do come to replace them you’ll need to make sure they meet the standard.
