Yelverton
Yelverton is a big town on the south-western side of Dartmoor, Devon, in England. When Yelverton train station (on the Great Western Railway (GWR) line from Plymouth to Tavistock) opened in the 19th century, the village became a popular residence for Plymouth commuters. The train is currently closed, yet the Plym Valley Railway has actually reopened an area of it. Yelverton is popular for Roborough Rock - a famous mass of rock close to the Plymouth road on the fringe of nearby Roborough Down, near the southern end of the airfield. It provided its name to the Rock Hotel, developed as a farm during the Elizabethan period, but transformed in the 1850s to cater for growing tourist in the area. The area to the south and also west of the roundabout at the centre of the town was settled in late Victorian as well as Edwardian times, with several grand and opulent rental properties. An area established at regarding the exact same time on an odd designed tract to the south of the Tavistock road is referred to as Leg o' Mutton Corner. At the start of the 2nd World War, a landing strip (RAF Harrowbeer) was constructed at surrounding Harrowbeer as a fighter station for the air protection of Devonport Dockyard as well as the Western Approaches. A 19th century terrace of residences, currently primarily exchanged stores, needed to have its upper storey got rid of to supply a much easier strategy. One tall structure which was not altered was St. Paul's Church, yet the tower was struck by an airplane, leading to a warning light being fitted. The format of the paths is still very clear and although they are considerably grassed over, the many earth as well as brick safety shelters constructed to protect the fighters from assault on the ground are all still in place. Some American airmen and anti-aircraft battery units were stationed here throughout the 2nd fifty percent of the war. A plane lugging President Roosevelt landed below when its original destination was fogbound.
