Aberystwyth
Aberystwyth is an old market town and popular holiday resort in Ceredigion, West Wales. Residents often call it Aber, and it is situated close to the confluence of the rivers Ystwyth and Rheidol.
The University of Aberystwyth was founded in 1872 and has had a large student population ever since. At the 2001 census, 13,040 people lived there, not including the extra 10,000 students expected between September and June.
Although the name of the town suggests the River Ystwyth runs through Aberystwyth, it only borders it. Only the River Rheidol passes through the town.
Aberystwyth has a pier and a seafront that runs from Constitution Hill to the mouth of the harbour. Constitution Hill is a hill and walking spot that has a cable railway and a Victorian camera obscura at the crest.
There is evidence that the space around Aberystwyth had settlers during the Mesolithic Age. Hunter-gatherers might have utlised the local flint to make weapons as the ice shrunk. There are also the ruins of a Celtic fortress on a hill overlooking Aberystwyth, meaning the site had settlers before 700AD.
