Extensions such as garage conversions will typically require additional damp proofing to be added during the conversion, as the pre-existing garage will typically have a single skin design for walls and floors, which was not built to be in accordance with building regulations for habitable rooms. This damp proofing should be added to walls and floors. In addition, the roof of the garage conversion will need water proofing. The damp proofing of the floor of the garage conversion will usually be achieved by employing a damp proof membrane. This membrane is available in either solid or liquid form. The damp proof membrane will be placed down either on top of the existing concrete floor, underneath the new floor, or as part of both, depending on if the floor will be a solid or a floating floor. In some garages, the walls have already been damp proofed, but this may have to be updated as part of the conversion to be able to meet current building regulations. The walls will need to be damp proofed in order to protect the brickwork from rotting gradually as moisture sets in. This can be performed by either utilising damp proof membranes, waterproof rendering, or cavity insulation, depending on the type of walls already present in the garage. Damp proofing is a part of the building regulations that the garage conversion should adhere to, and so is it vital to make sure that your garage conversion incorporates suitable damp proofing methods.
The average cost of Damp proofing is £1500. Costs vary based upon the materials and the organisation selected. The upper price range can be as high as £1725. The material costs are in general about £375

West Linton is a village and also civil parish in southerly Scotland, on the A702. It was previously in the county of Peeblesshire, but considering that local government re-organisation in the mid-1990s it is now part of Scottish Borders. Most of its citizens are commuters, owing to the village's distance to Edinburgh, which is 16 miles (26 km) to the north eastern. West Linton has a long history, and holds an annual traditional festival called the Whipman Play. The village of Linton is of ancient origin. Its name derives from a Celtic element (cognate with the modern-day Irish Gaelic linn, Scottish Gaelic linne, and also contemporary Welsh "Llyn") indicating a lake or pool, a pool in a river, or a network (as in Loch Linnhe, part of which is called An Linne Dhubh, the black swimming pool, or Dublin, an Anglicisation of dubh and also linn, implying black swimming pool) and the Gaelic "dun" Welsh "hullabaloo"), for a citadel, fortified place, or army camp (related to the contemporary English town, by way of the Saxon "tun", a farm or collection of dwellings), as well as is seemingly appropriate, as the town appears to have actually been surrounded by lakes, pools and marshes. At once it was called Lyntoun Roderyck, determined possibly with Roderyck or Riderch, King of Strathclyde, whose area included this location, or with a local chieftain of that name. The Scottish Gaelic version of the name is a partial translation, Ruairidh being a Gaelic form of Roderick. The prefix "West" was obtained several centuries later to make clear the difference from East Linton in East Lothian.

There are a few visible signs of damp, although it often goes undetected. However, in older or empty properties, this made become detectable through its smell. These include peeling paint and wallpaper, crumbling plaster, mould growth, black spots or spores on walls and ceilings, and rotting skirting boards and flooring.
Damp is a serious problem, particularly if you live in an old property, because it can lead to structural damage. This will cost you big money and could be very dangerous, to yourself and the property. Take damp seriously and get it inspected and resolved as soon as you discover it!
Signs of rising damp tend to be close to the ground, usually no higher than a metre. It usually works its way up walls in horizontal lines. Penetrating damp usually develops in patches and can often be much higher up. For more advice, speak to a damp proofing professional.
You should make sure that all signs of damp have gone before you redecorate your walls. If you want to paint your walls with a water-permeable emulsion paint, you can usually do this after 1 or 2 months. For other types of decoration you should wait longer.
