Garden Sheds in Leatherhead

Garden sheds are a vital factor of any useful garden space. They can provide storage for cumbersome garden tools, as well as for other tools. A sizeable shed might even provide enough space for plant potting or a general workshop. Alternatively, a big shed could be used as an indoor sitting area. Garden sheds come in an enormous choice of sizes and can be specified to your precise requirements, giving you full control over the number and placement of windows, type, size and location of door, and design of roof. Garden sheds typically come in one of three materials. Wooden sheds are the classic style and can be integrated well into any garden creating a natural look, especially if the wood used for the shed is matched to neighbouring fences. Wooden sheds are still very popular, although they will require maintenance by retreating or staining the wood to preserve the life of the shed. Garden sheds are also constructed from metal, which is very strong and therefore ideal for storage of tools and other equipment. Metal sheds also require hardly any maintenance. The final material for garden sheds is plastic, which in modern examples is a lot more durable than might be expected. When contemplating a garden shed, it's critical to ensure that you select one that will fit in your garden space. Garden sheds will need to be placed on a level area, and will require a base to be built as a foundation. This base could be produced from either concrete, paving, gravel or a floating wooden base, but will need to be the right size for your shed and able to support the weight of your shed when loaded.

Leatherhead

Leatherhead is a town in Surrey, England on the right shore of the river Mole, and beside the contiguous built-up area of London. The town covers a total area of around 4.84 square miles. Its regional district is Mole Valley. Records exist of the region from Anglo Saxon England. Just north-east of the midpoint of Surrey and at a junction of ancient north-- south and east-- west roads, features of the town have actually been a focal point for transportation throughout its history. A main early spur to this was the development of the bridge over the seasonally accessible River Mole in the early medieval time period. Later On the Swan Hotel provided 300 years of service to horse-drawn coaches. In the late 20th century the M25 motorway was established nearby. According to the 2011 Census, the town has a permanent population of around 11316 individuals. The town has re-developed regularly through fluctuating financial demands and planning. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Mole Valley District Council made strategies to modernise the town, with a new pedestrianised high street and a large one-way system. It has a combined theatre and movie theatre. Leatherhead's different business properties produce lunchtime demand and its restaurants and theatre attract people from around Surrey. The undulating streetscape lends itself more to warm summer nights. The theatre (see below) is a movie theatre and also has art exhibitions. The bypass streets to the town centre close and function annually in the London-Surrey cycle classic which is ranked by the world's cycling federation. For all your home makeovers, make certain to find trusted experts in Leatherhead to make certain of quality.

FAQs

How to felt a shed roof?
Whether you want to felt a new shed roof or you’re re-felting your existing shed roof, it’s simple when you know how. Read our quick guide to see how easy it is.
  1. Remove any existing fascia boards Remove the fascia boards and the old felt if you’re re-felting.
  2. Measure the shed roof Measure the roof, taking into account that you should leave around 50mm for overlaps at the eaves and 75mm at the gable ends. You’ll probably need 3 pieces of felt, but some smaller sheds only need 2.
  3. Apply felt to the roof Once you’ve cut the felt to size, apply the each piece to the roof, pulling it tight. Then nail along the length of the roof at 100mm intervals. For nails at the bottom edge, they can be wider – around 300mm. If you’re adding a piece of felt in the middle of the shed along the apex, fix it using adhesive, then nail it at the lower edge at 50mm intervals.
  4. Tidy up the overhangs Fold down the felt at each overhang and nail it securely. Cut a slit in the overhang at the apex using a pen knife, then fold that down and nail at 100mm intervals along the gable. If you like, you can add fascia boards to keep the shed looking neat. Use wood nails to secure them and then trim away any excess felt.
That’s it. It sounds scary, but it won’t take you long to felt your shed roof as long as you follow instructions carefully.
How to dismantle a shed?
It can seem daunting to dismantle a shed when you want to get a new one or just get rid of it for good. Every shed is different and is likely to have been put together in a different way, but there are some general rules that you can follow to make dismantling a shed a simple task.
  1. Remove fascias and trims Unscrew or prise off the screws and nails fixing the trims and fascias to your shed.
  2. Take off doors and remove windows Unscrew hinges from doors and take them off. Remove all metalwork once the door is off. If you’ve got frames on your windows, unscrew these, and remove the panes. Be extra careful if your windows are made of glass.
  3. Take off the roof Prise off the tacks from the roofing felt and take the felt off – you can’t reuse it, so you’ll need to throw it away. Unscrew the screws on the roof boards and slide them off the shed’s frame – you might need a friend to help you do this.
  4. Take out the roof brace (optional) If your roof has a brace, unscrew the brackets that hold it to the side of the shed. Remember not to lean on anything once you’ve taken the brace off as the walls might be wobbly.
  5. Unscrew the frame from the floor Remove all the screws that are holding the shed to the base, remembering not to lean on the walls.
  6. Unscrew the frame corners Starting at the corner of the front gable, remove the screws where the panels meet. Once a panel is free, lift it carefully out of the way so you can carry on with the others.
Tidy up all your tools and debris, clearing the area to make it safe, and you’re done!
Where should I put my garden shed?

Try to put your shed in open space, away from trees, bushes and other buildings. This will help to protect it from falling branches and sap. It will also mean that you can access all sides of the shed for repair and maintenance purposes. Make sure you take a look at garden shed planning rules before you pick a final spot for your shed.

Do I need planning permission for a shed?
Generally, you don’t need planning permission for a shed if you live in England or Wales. This applies whether it’s a wooden, metal, plastic or brick shed. However, there are a few conditions your shed will have to meet to not require planning permission:
  • The shed doesn’t cover more than 50% of the garden
  • It’s not in front of your house
  • The shed is single-storey with eaves no higher than 2.5m and the overall height is no taller than 4m for a dual-pitched roof, or 3m for any other type. If it’s located within 2 metres of your property’s boundary, it mustn't be more than 2.5m high
  • There’s no veranda or balcony
  • The floor area is no bigger than 15m2 - up to 30m2 may be covered under Permitted Development if other conditions are met
  • The shed is for domestic use only by those who live in the property and there’s no sleeping accommodation – that means you can’t run a business from the shed unless you apply for planning permission
Exceptions Of course, there are always exceptions:
  • If you live in a listed building, you’ll need Listed Building Consent before you can build a shed in your garden
  • If you live in a conservation area or similar, the maximum area of ground covered by outbuildings, pools and enclosures situated more than 20m from any wall of the house mustn’t exceed 10m2 if they’re to be considered as a permitted development
  • If you own a piece of woodland, you must seek planning permission for any permanent structure
  • In Scotland, you’ll need planning permission if any part of the shed comes within 1m of a neighbouring property or is more than 2.5m high
  • In Northern Ireland, there are rules about how close your shed can be from a road that passes by the back of your house. It’s best to check for clarification
So if you live in a straightforward house in England or Wales, you shouldn’t need planning permission for your shed. If you’re in any doubt, make sure you check with your local planning office.
